href=\"https:\/\/www.nssl.noaa.gov\/education\/svrwx101\/lightning\/faq\/\">20 million lightning bolts strike the United States each year<\/a>, and while\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/community.fema.gov\/ProtectiveActions\/s\/article\/Thunderstorm-Lightning-and-Hail-Impact\">lightning can be dangerous<\/a>\u00a0and is responsible for\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/media\/safety\/Global_Aspects_holle15.pdf\">billions in damage<\/a>\u00a0each year, when viewed from a safe distance, it can be an electrifying display of natural beauty.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonrweingart.com\/\">Photographer Jason Weingart<\/a>\u00a0uses that natural beauty\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonrweingart.com\/lightning-photography\">to make stunning artwork<\/a>, and now he\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonrweingart.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/20\/how-to-photograph-lightning\">sharing some of his tips<\/a>\u00a0to getting that perfect shot.<\/p>\n<p>Weingart\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonrweingart.com\/tornado-adventures\">travels the nation<\/a>\u00a0chasing storms, a passion that began with a fateful thunderstorm outside his Austin, Texas home. Weingart\u2019s career began as a sports photographer, but tiring of the repetitive nature of the business, he tried to get some lightning photos from his driveway as he\u2019s had an interest in weather since childhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me a few tries, and then I finally got one, and I decided that\u2019s what I really liked,\u201d Weingart said. \u201cAnd I just ran with that and quit doing all the studio stuff that we had to do\u2026 I was just done with it and just completely on nature weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Youll_Need_To_Bring_Along\"><\/span>What You\u2019ll Need To Bring Along<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Weingart says\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonrweingart.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/20\/how-to-photograph-lightning\">there are some essentials to getting that perfect lightning shot<\/a>: A <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>od, a DSLR or other camera capable of shooting longer exposures, a radar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> for your smartphone (we\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/app\">know of a pretty good one<\/a>), a remote trigger such as an intervalometer or lightning trigger, and some rain protection for your camera.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t skimp on the tripod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t cheap out on that $50 tripod that everyone has \u2013 the little plastic one because it\u2019s absolutely going to get tossed by that wind,\u201d he says, noting winds around thunderstorms can suddenly gust to 30-70 mph. \u201cI\u2019ve broken lots of cameras on cheaper tripods.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Weingart has been studying weather for years now, so he is well versed in the forecast, but he says newer high-resolution short-term forecast models that update every hour\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rapidrefresh.noaa.gov\/hrrr\/\">like the HRRR model<\/a>\u00a0are pretty on point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes it pretty easy anymore to pick your target locations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Florida is the lightning capital of the U.S., while the desert monsoon season in the Southwest in the summer are popular places to find frequent lightning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArizona was great for that kind of thing during summer because it\u2019s super predictable,\u201d he says. \u00a0\u201cYou got just crazy terrain with the mountains and cactus and things like that.\u201d But he travels 50,000 miles a year chasing the storms from the Dakotas to the Gulf.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img Weather<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once you\u2019re near your thunderstorm, look for a place on the outer edge of the storm where it\u2019s drier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really don\u2019t want to be shooting from the core of the storm, where all the rain is,\u201d he\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonrweingart.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/20\/how-to-photograph-lightning\">says in his online lightning tutorial<\/a>. \u201cYou most likely won\u2019t be able to keep your lens clean enough to get a good shot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He says if you\u2019re under the anvil of the storm \u2014 some of the best places for getting lightning, it could be raining at which point you\u2019ll want to be under an awning, use an umbrella, or even set up a tripod in your car.<\/p>\n<p>He says he captured this dramatic lightning shot from a tripod on his passenger seat, as it was raining at the Weather<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another tip: Compose your shot to where it would look good even without the lightning so if you capture a lightning strike. \u201cIf you want your pictures to stand apart from everyone else\u2019s, find a compelling foreground, Weingart suggests. \u201cThere are millions of lightning photos out there. What can you do to make yours different?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Always capture images in the RAW file setting \u2014 don\u2019t use JPEG \u2014 which will allow you to later recover more details in shadows, color balance and highlights, he says. Though those images are larger file sizes so be sure to have enough storage capacity.<\/p>\n<p>And take care not to overexpose your lightning shot \u2014 a common mistake in lightning photography.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to be sure your lightning isn\u2019t overexposed,\u201d he says. \u201cBut at the same time, you need to have some light in your foreground to add depth to the image.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Do_I_Want_To_Set_My_Camera_Settings\"><\/span>How Do I Want To Set My Camera Settings?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Weingart says there is no single magic camera setting to capture lightning as the best settings are dependent on several variables, such as distance to the storm and time of day.<\/p>\n<p>Weingart has dozens of tips in his lightning tutorial but says there are three main categories of lightning photography: Daylight lightning, sunset\/sunrise lightning and nocturnal lightning.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/lightning-lessons-142.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Weingart  is well versed in the forecast, but he says newer high-resolution short-term forecast models are on point.\" class=\"wp-image-21949617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/lightning-lessons-142.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/lightning-lessons-142.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/lightning-lessons-142.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Weingart is well versed in the forecast, but he says newer high-resolution short-term forecast models are on point.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Jason Weingart\/FOX Weather<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nighttime lightning is the best for getting the most detailed lightning shot, but capturing bolts are sunrise or sunset can be the most colorful and dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>But there are some tips common to all times of day:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a tripod and an intervalometer to eliminate camera shake<\/li>\n<li>Turn off any image stabilization your lens may have<\/li>\n<li>Manually focus lens to infinity: \u201cThe best way to do this is by switching to the live view setting on the camera and zooming in on a distant light source in your LCD screen,\u201d he says. \u201cTurn the focus ring until the light appears sharp.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For specific settings, he says it depends on such factors as how close is the lightning (if close, stop down the aperture and keep ISO relatively low to prevent light blowout), how fast clouds are moving (if moving fast with frequent lightning, use shorter exposure times to prevent \u201cghosting\u201d of images), how much ambient light (bright lights in the foreground would require shorter exposures and lower ISO) and if making a time lapse, keep exposures short otherwise video will too short.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/lightning-lessons-147.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"The photographer recommends getting a high quality tripod that can withstand strong winds. \" class=\"wp-image-21949623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/lightning-lessons-147.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/lightning-lessons-147.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/lightning-lessons-147.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The photographer recommends getting a high quality tripod that can withstand strong winds. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Jason Weingart\/FOX Weather<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Take test exposures first to make sure your settings are good before you let the camera run for an extended time, and if you leave your camera in one spot and shoot at consistent intervals, not only can you get a great time lapse video, but you can combine several images into an \u201capocalyptic looking lightning stack.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Safety_First\"><\/span>Safety First!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Lightning is an incredible sight, but it\u2019s also incredibly dangerous. Bolts can have anywhere from 100 million to 1 billion volts and can heat the surrounding air to as much as 50,000 degrees.
