“#Phil Mickelson\u2019s CBS booth experience had bit of everything<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Phil Mickelson\u2019s credentials were well-established by the time he settled into the broadcast booth during the third round of the PGA Championship.<\/p>\n

As a golfer.<\/p>\n

And as a talker. <\/p>\n

The five-time major champion joined Jim Nantz and Nick Faldo in the CBS booth on Saturday after the third round at TPC Harding Park. Barely making Friday\u2019s cut at 1 over, Mickelson teed off early Saturday and was off the course \u2014 even par for the day \u2014 before leader Li Haotong teed off. <\/p>\n

That gave him plenty of free time to kill. <\/p>\n

Unlike Li, who returned to the range after taking the 36-hole lead, the 50-year-old Mickelson visited his friend Nantz in the booth in what may have been a tryout for his next career move. CBS says it spoke to Mickelson earlier in the week about joining the broadcast if the timing worked out. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s three things I do well: play golf and talk golf,\u201d Mickelson said, with the unspoken third item a bit of sexual innuendo that went over Faldo\u2019s head.<\/p>\n

But after that awkward beginning, Mickelson added a players\u2019 perspective that even Faldo \u2014 a six-time major champion who hasn\u2019t played regularly on tour in almost 20 years \u2014 couldn\u2019t. <\/p>\n

Li, Mickelson said, was one of the funniest guys on the tour. Matthew Wolff in his tie-dye shirt \u201cjust looks cool to me, all-around cool,\u201d Mickelson said, before getting into a technical breakdown of the 2019 NCAA champion\u2019s swing.<\/p>\n

Mickelson also shared some insight on what it has been like playing events without fans. The PGA Championship, which was rescheduled from May, is the first major tournament since the coronavirus pandemic shut everything down, including sports. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe all miss it, we miss the electricity. That\u2019s a big part of the fun of it,\u201d said Mickelson, a fan favorite who often draws some of the biggest galleries on the tour. \u201cSome players like to feed off the energy in the crowd to help them, I certainly do.\u201d<\/p>\n

A notorious gambler, Mickelson\u2019s analysis went awry when he started making predictions. When Jason Day had a long putt on No. 5 for birdie, Mickelson read the break and predicted that Day would make it. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to see Jason take that 45-footer. I think he\u2019s going to jar it,\u201d Mickelson said.<\/p>\n

Day left it about about three feet short. <\/p>\n

\u201cA rare sight in golf,\u201d Faldo chimed in. \u201cPhil Mickelson: Wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Li putted out for bogey on the par-4 fifth hole, Mickelson predicted it would be a wake-up call. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis bogey right here is going to get Haotong from swinging conservative and tentative to getting after it, like he did yesterday,\u201d Mickelson said. \u201cI think he\u2019s going to birdie six and\/or seven, and get this round turned around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Li then put his drive on No. 6 into the rough. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019m 0 for 2 on my predictions. This announcing thing might not be my thing,\u201d Mickelson said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe learn not to predict, Phil,\u201d Faldo said gently. \u201cThat\u2019s the key.\u201d<\/p>\n

(Li did birdie No. 7, after Mickelson had left the booth) <\/p>\n

Mickelson spent about an hour on the broadcast before taking his leave. <\/p>\n

\u201cGood luck tomorrow, and we\u2019ll see you in the playoffs. We app<\/a>reciate the visit,\u201d Nantz said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard work, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mickelson flashed his mischievous Mickelson smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
