Friedman Theatre Wednesday night. And now she is onstage again with much of that same cast, including David Morse, who plays the uncle that grooms Parker\u2019s character Li\u2019l Bit from her early teens.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--review alignleft\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n        <span class=\"inline-module--review__eyebrow widget-heading-semi__label\"><br \/>\n            Theater review      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>        1\u00a0hour and 40 minutes without intermission. At the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, 261 W. 47th Street.\n    <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The reunion has its virtues and its drawbacks. Since Li\u2019l Bit looks back through time \u2014 each scene is told through a different \u201cdriving lesson\u201d \u2014 Parker has the benefit of reflection and her own life experience since the late \u201990s. She\u2019s a deep-feeling actress and an unfailingly genuine presence, and is always a wonder to watch.<\/p>\n<p>Still, if time doesn\u2019t necessarily heal all wounds, it can at least soften painful memories. And \u201cHow I Learned To Drive,\u201d once again directed by Mark Brokaw, is lighter than I have ever seen it. The show hit me harder in a small room when I was in college. After all, what was once quietly frowned upon is now rightly seen as a grievous sin of the abuser. The scene doesn\u2019t quite reach those heights of emotion.<\/p>\n<p>The younger supporting cast, Alyssa May Gold and Chris Myers, play a number of parts, none of which they fully embody and their acting is overly presentational. Johanna Day, who also <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared in the original production, has some spot-on moments, though, including a heart-wrenching speech where she acknowledges her husband Peck\u2019s penchant for cheating and a funny one where she lists off rules for women drinking.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/how-i-learned-to-drive-11.jpg?w=683\" alt=\"Mary-Louise Parker perches serenely at the edge of the stage at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All of these scenes occur in front of Rachel Hauck\u2019s set of bland gradient columns with a nondescript table and a few chairs. \u201cHow I Learned To Drive\u201d doesn\u2019t need a lot \u2014 or even any \u2014 scenery, but what\u2019s there right now is limiting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s rewarding to return to Vogel\u2019s play, if only to understand her growth as a writer. Stylistically, her superior \u201cIndecent,\u201d which played Broadway in 2015, couldn\u2019t be more different than \u201cDrive.\u201d Throughout her career, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/winners\/paula-vogel\">she\u2019s never coasted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And there is poignancy to Parker and Morse reckoning with Li\u2019l Bit and Uncle Peck after all these years. Morse, especially, humanizes the man into somebody we, at least, try to understand.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One thing that is so remarkable about Parker is her comfort on a Broadway stage. During the play, she sits at the edge and speaks to the audience so serenely and unwaveringly. Even big stars sometimes get the jitters and dive their hands into their pockets like a little kid hiding under the covers. Not Parker.
