Before their ban, they were widely used to manufacture capacitors, hydraulic fluids, lubricants, plasticizers and transformers.<\/p>\n<p>Human exposure to PCBs could result in maladies including skin conditions, liver damage, neurological conditions, cancer, an impaired immune system, cognitive disruptions, motor problems, birth defects, and interference in hormonal function. <\/p>\n<p>The Post has reached out to Boston-based GE seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Behan, a spokesperson for GE, told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crainsnewyork.com\/climate-change\/ge-should-be-forced-spend-22b-hudson-river-cleanup-report-says\">Crain\u2019s New York<\/a> that the company rejects any calls to fund additional dredging of the river.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/general-electric-ny-pollution-3.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"GE dumped millions of tons of PCBs in the Hudson River from 1947 to 1977, according to Scenic Hudson.\" class=\"wp-image-21957525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/general-electric-ny-pollution-3.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/general-electric-ny-pollution-3.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/general-electric-ny-pollution-3.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>GE dumped millions of tons of PCBs in the Hudson River from 1947 to 1977, according to Scenic Hudson.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGE\u2019s dredging of the upper Hudson River has been hailed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a \u2018historic achievement,\u2019 and EPA, supported by the federal courts, has concluded no additional dredging is needed,\u201d Behan said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud of our contributions and will continue to work closely with local, state and federal agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scenic Hudson says it conducted a study evaluating the potential cost of dredging the river to \u201cprevent further injury to natural resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group claims that GE caused $11.4 billion worth of damage to the river through its dumping campaign.<\/p>\n<p>GE should also pay an additional $10.7 billion to dredge the Upper Hudson River \u201cto address significant PCB contamination remaining in river sediments that will continue to cause harm to wildlife and communities along the river for many decades if not removed.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/general-electric-ny-pollution-2.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"The Hudson River is on a federal list of sites that are in need of cleanup due to severe contamination.\" class=\"wp-image-21957522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/general-electric-ny-pollution-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/general-electric-ny-pollution-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/general-electric-ny-pollution-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The Hudson River is on a federal list of sites that are in need of cleanup due to severe contamination.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGE\u2019s contamination has caused 70 years of harm, that is expected to last another 50 years or more into the future,\u201d said Dagmar Schmidt Etkin, an environmental researcher and one of the authors of the report.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s actions have resulted in \u201cpollution of drinking water, fishery closures and fish consumption restrictions, compromised river navigation in marinas and canals, and threats to the health of waterfowl and mammals,\u201d according to Etkin.<\/p>\n<p>GE completed removal of 2.75 million cubic yards of PBC-contaminated river sediment in the upper Hudson in 2015. The company requested a certificate of completion from the EPA in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>But the administration of former New York Gov.
