At the Booth Theatre, 222 W 45th Street.\n    <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Just how relevant is this show anymore?<\/p>\n<p>The sluggish revival of the 1976 drama, which opened Wednesday night on Broadway, doesn\u2019t make a particularly compelling case for its up-to-the-minute-ness.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The play comes across, unfortunately, as an antiquated time machine that\u2019s at odds with the current conversation. Being a glimpse into a specific, different era would be OK \u2014 plenty of revivals fit that bill \u2014 but \u201cfor colored girls\u201d seems awfully intent on speaking forcefully to the present moment. A strong connection to today, however, is nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n<p>Although women\u2019s suffering \u2014 the main topic \u2014 has sadly never gone away, the manner in which it\u2019s discussed in Ntozake Shange\u2019s work is uncomfortably antiquated.<\/p>\n<p>For one, the poetry piece, which has been widely acclaimed through the years, is built around an old-school feminism that\u2019s dependent on women loudly railing against men.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/for-colored-girls-2.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Seven women tell traumatic stories in &quot;for colored girls.&quot; \" class=\"wp-image-21978946\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/for-colored-girls-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/for-colored-girls-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/for-colored-girls-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Seven women tell traumatic stories in \u201cfor colored girls.\u201d <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Polk &amp; Co<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The seven black women onstage, each named after a color, give imagery laden speeches that are often about their traumatic experiences with rapists, murderers, alcoholics, cheaters and other jerks. Good guys are nearly impossible to find. The de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ions of the black men the characters encounter now read as extremely stereotypical.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Describing what rapists are like, for instance, the characters say, \u201cpin-ups attached to the insides of his lapels \/ ticket stubs from porno flicks in his pocket.\u201d   <\/p>\n<p>Shange also writes in a you-love-it-or-you-don\u2019t style that has women tell us their stories of parties, dates, sexual experiences and more. These are expressive monologues, not enacted scenes, and it\u2019s easy to get lost in all the rhythm and description. Some of them are downright sedate, and make you glaze over.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, the cast is tight knit and vivacious. They are Amara Granderson, Tendayi Kuumba, Kenita R. Miller, Okwui Okpokwasili, Stacey Sargeant, Alexandria Wailes and D. Woods.\u00a0 Okpokwasili and Woods give especially gripping performances.<\/p>\n<p>The liveliest sections of the production are non-verbal. Director Camille A. Brown\u2019s brightly choreographed dance transitions brings celebration to a play that\u2019s often a sequence of airing of grievances, although it has its funny bits. <\/p>\n<p>There is a triumphant power in the women\u2019s movement to music that draws us in spectacularly.
