Most notably, the company has tweaked its ranking algorithm to highlight original content above reshared content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head of<\/span> Instagram<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Adam Mosseri<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mosseri\/status\/1516811952235769860\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the following about the ranking change:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you create something from scratch, you should get more credit than if you are resharing something that you found from someone else. We\u2019re going to do more to try and value original content more, particularly compared to reposted content.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, you should probably stop sharing TikTok and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> posts from other people and come up with some ideas of your own, thank you very much.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83d\udce3 New Features \ud83d\udce3<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve added new ways to tag and improved ranking: <\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Product Tags<br \/>\u2013 Enhanced Tags <br \/>\u2013 Ranking for originality <\/p>\n<p>Creators are so important to the future of Instagram, and we want to make sure that they are successful and get all the credit they deserve. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PP7Qa10oJr\">pic.twitter.com\/PP7Qa10oJr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Adam Mosseri (@mosseri) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mosseri\/status\/1516811952235769860?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 20, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company has already taken steps to mitigate resharing. In 2021, the algorithm began to downrank reshared Reels with the TikTok logo. As my colleague Ivan<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the time, it was an unfair move for creators who might not want to go through the effort of recreating the same content for different social media platforms. It was also an ironic move considering Reels itself is very much a TikTok clone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, today\u2019s announcement is likely for the best, considering how many Instagram accounts build clout off the work of others \u2014 often without credit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, it wasn\u2019t clear from Mosseri\u2019s message if the new algorithm tweak would further affect creators who are simply resharing their own content from other platforms. We\u2019ve reached out to Instagram for clarification and will update this post if we hear back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originality aside, the next of today\u2019s updates include the ability for Instagrammers to<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.instagram.com\/blog\/announcements\/instagram-feed-product-tagging\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tag specific products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their posts. You can read more about the feature on Instagram\u2019s post<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.instagram.com\/blog\/announcements\/instagram-feed-product-tagging\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, Instagram is rolling out enhanced people tags. This allows you to set a de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ive tag for yourself \u2014 examples included \u2018photographer,\u2019 \u2018rapper,\u2019 and \u2018fashion stylist \u2014 which show up alongside your handle in image tags. These tags can be set in your Instagram profile settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These changes are reflective of an Instagram that has shifted its focus away from being a social network for food and pet photos, to being a platform for capital-C Content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reels have been incredibly successful for the platform, but that victory has been somewhat shallow. As reported by <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/23002679\/reels-facebook-tiktok-video\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recode<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March, an analysis by the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/integrityinstitute.org\/widely-viewed-content-analysis-tracking-dashboard\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrity Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earlier in this year showed that many of the most popular Reels (as well as the most popular posts on Facebook) were largely posted by accounts which simply reshare content:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe most common use for unoriginal content is to recycle memes, jokes, or questions that had previously gone viral on other platforms. We found content that was originally produced for Twitter, Reddit, Quora, and YouTube being reposted onto Facebook and gaining very broad distribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Q4, we get our first view into the Instagram Reels ecosystem, and how frequent unoriginal content is there. Overall, unoriginal content in Instagram Reels appears to be about as prevalent as in Facebook overall, and so there isn\u2019t a significant shift from Q3 to Q4.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision to cut down on reshared content might hurt some accounts at first, but it\u2019s likely crucial for the future of Reels. If Meta wants its social networks to thrive in the long run, they need to be more than the venue redistributing content from its competitors.
