A big reason for that increase is the\u00a039.8 per cent rise in gasoline costs since March of last year.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Who is to blame?<\/strong> Inevitably, there is some finger pointing about this state of affairs. In the <em>Star<\/em>, <strong>Heather Scoffield<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2022\/04\/20\/politicians-are-flinging-blame-for-rising-inflation-in-every-direction-and-theyre-all-a-little-bit-right.html\">writes<\/a>\u00a0that some of it is likely warranted.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ottawa didn\u2019t see inflation coming when it issued all that pandemic aid. The central bank didn\u2019t see it coming when it cut rates to near zero and bought government bonds en masse to keep financial markets functioning smoothly. Those were the right decisions to take at the time, when inflation was nowhere to be seen and COVID-19 meant a shutdown of many parts of the economy, throwing people out of work. In hindsight, while <strong>they could perhaps have withdrawn their support sooner<\/strong> as they saw labour markets recovering, there\u2019s an open question about whether Canada alone could have tempered the inflation problem surging <strong>around the world<\/strong> right now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Walkout:<\/strong> <strong>Chrystia Freeland<\/strong> and Canadian officials joined allies in a walkout of a G20 meeting in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday in protest of Russia\u2019s involvement, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/freeland-allies-walk-out-of-g20-meeting-over-russian-participation-1.5868864\">reports<\/a>. Freeland tweeted: \u201cThis week\u2019s meetings in Washington are about supporting the world economy \u2013 and Russia\u2019s illegal invasion of Ukraine is a grave threat to the global economy. Russia should not be participating or included in these meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A government source said Freeland also spoke directly to Russian officials who were present in-person, telling them they are complicit in war crimes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No details:<\/strong> Justin Trudeau remained tight-lipped about Canada sending heavy artillery to Ukraine, citing \u201coperational security,\u201d CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/pm-tight-lipped-on-any-details-surrounding-sending-heavy-artillery-to-ukraine-1.5868614\">reports<\/a>. Trudeau said Tuesday that Canada would be sending heavy artillery to Ukraine in response to a request from Ukrainian President <strong>Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong>. When pressed on Wednesday, the Prime Minister had little else to say: \u201cFor reasons of operational security, I can\u2019t go into the details at this point on how and what we\u2019re getting to them exactly. But I can assure you we will have more to say in the coming days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aeroplan fund:<\/strong> Canada has launched a program to allow Canadians to donate cash or\u00a0Aeroplan points to help bring Ukrainians to Canada, CP\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/canada-launches-aeroplan-fund-to-bring-ukrainians-to-canada-1.5869004\">reports.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Immigration Minister <strong>Sean Fraser<\/strong> says the goal is to pay for flights to bring at least 10,000 Ukrainians and their families <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> to Canada. These would be on top of targeted chartered flights to bring Ukrainians to Canada announced by Prime Minister <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> earlier this year. More than 54,000 Ukrainians have already been approved to come to Canada for three years while they decide on their next steps.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Polarizing Pierre:\u00a0Pierre Poilievre<\/strong> looks well ahead in the CPC race, but he may not be able to broaden the party\u2019s appeal, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8770473\/ipsos-conservative-leadership-2022\/\">according to an Ipsos poll<\/a> for Global News.<\/p>\n<p>The poll found 20 per cent of Canadians surveyed think Poilievre will win the race,\u00a0 37 per cent among Conservative voters. <strong>Jean Charest<\/strong> earned 12 per cent among Canadians and just 14 per cent among Conservative voters. Charest is viewed more favourably among Liberal voters (40 per cent) than Conservatives (27 per cent) while Poilievre \u2014 who nearly half of Liberal and NDP voters view negatively \u2014 is seen by 50 per cent of Conservative voters as the most favourable candidate.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve really got this tale of two candidates,\u201d said <strong>Sean Simpson<\/strong>, vice-president of Ipsos Public Affairs. \u201cOne of them is very popular with the party, but not outside the party. And the other one, the exact opposite is true. So Conservatives have a clear choice ahead of them.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Polarized: Poilievre <\/strong>held (another) big campaign event on Tuesday, this one at Toronto\u2019s Steam Whistle brewery, whose management handed out <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/davidakin\/status\/1516580748689559558\">a letter<\/a> disassociating themselves from his views. In the <em>Star<\/em>, <strong>Susan Delacourt<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2022\/04\/20\/steam-whistle-pierre-poilievre-and-canadas-toxic-partisanship.html?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialMedia&amp;utm_campaign=OpinionStaff&amp;utm_content=steamwhistle\">writes that<\/a> that unusual letter shows where politics is headed in this country: \u201ca harder, more polarized place, where personal and business reputations can get tarnished by association.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Poilievre\u2019s supporters were bristling at Steam Whistle\u2019s disclaimer on Tuesday night, eager to see it as another example of \u201ccancel culture\u201d and Conservatives being punished once again for being politically incorrect.
