Neighbors, well-wishers, gawkers and the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> crowded the street to witness the joyous reunion on March 2, 1980.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> stories are not h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening very often, even back then they didn\u2019t,\u201d his mother, Kay, recalls in a new three-part docu<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/click?id=XRMZVUE6JmY&amp;offerid=852731.19&amp;type=3&amp;subid=0&amp;u1=nyp\">Hulu<\/a>, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/series\/captive-audience-a-real-american-horror-story-d840873f-211e-47a8-864b-8aa7c54d193c\">Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story<\/a>,\u201d which premieres Thursday, April 21. \u201cI wanted to share Steve\u2019s homecoming with the world. I wanted to share the happiness that we had \u2014 the good outcome but then that had a bad side too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The series revisits Steven\u2019s abduction in 1972, his daring escape with another kidnapping victim, and his struggles under an intense media glare after he returned home. A lot of alcohol and a lot of pot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Director Jessica Dimmock told The Post that she was surprised by what the teenager went through in the public eye. \u201cSteven\u2019s suffering was so on display.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stolen_at_7\"><\/span>Stolen at 7<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On December 4, 1972, Steven was walking home from school when a man stopped him. He asked if Steven\u2019s mother would be interested in donating to a church. Steven said yes and Ervin Murphy offered him a ride home. He then told Steven that he went to court and had \u201cgotten possession\u201d of him. A week after his abduction, Steven was told to call Parnell dad and that he had a new name, \u201cDennis Parnell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning he sort of, like, brainwashed me to believe that my parents didn\u2019t want me. So after a while, I was happy,\u201d Steven says in an audio recording, sourced from a conversation between him and \u201cI Know My First Name Is Steven\u201d screenwriter JP Miller.<\/p>\n<p>For seven years, Steven and Parnell presented themselves as father and son. As Dennis, Steven was enrolled in schools, including one in Point Arena, Calif., which was roughly a 5-hour drive from his hometown. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, his family tried to keep his disappearance in the news in the hopes of getting information.<\/p>\n<p>Steven says that he was \u201calways scared\u201d of Parnell, which is why he never told anyone about the molestation and rape. \u201cHe told me one time not to tell. And he never had to tell me again,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>In mid-February 1980, Parnell kidnapped another boy, Timmy White \u2014 and soon after Steven started to think about their escape.<\/p>\n<p>On March 1, 1980, the two boys walked and hitched some 50 miles from Point Arena to a police station in Timmy\u2019s hometown of Ukiah, California. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"967\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/515125536.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Timmy White, 5, who disappeared on Valentine's Day, sits on the lap of Steven Stayner, 14 and tries to blow a balloon up during press conference. As details of the sexual abuse came out in the media and at Parnell\u2019s trial, Steven was called names, including a slur for gay men, at school.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Triumph_then_tragedy\"><\/span>Triumph, then tragedy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For a few years, Steven was, as his mom put it, a \u201crabble rouser.\u201d But eventually he reformed.<\/p>\n<p>Steven met his wife, Jody, while working at a butcher shop. \u201cSteven was so much more grounded than the other kids. He was real calm,\u201d Jody says in the series.<\/p>\n<p>They married in 1985, when he was 20 and had two children: Ashley and Steven Jr. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a good dad. He was a good family man. Actor Corin Nemec starred as Steven and the real Steven had a cameo as a police officer. Jody says he was happy with the film, and audiences liked it, too \u2014 \u201cnearly 40 million viewers tuned in, making it NBC\u2019s highest rated miniseries in five years,\u201d according to \u201cCaptive Audience.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s unheard of,\u201d Nemec says in the series. \u201cIt really generated a lot of attention to such a touchy subject nobody wants to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI Know My First Name Is Steven\u201d was nominated for four Emmy Awards. The night before the ceremony, Steven was riding his motorcycle home when he was fatally struck by a car. He was only 24.<\/p>\n<p>The family was \u201cdevastated\u201d to lose Steven again, his sister Cory says.<\/p>\n<p>And it wasn\u2019t the last tragedy the family would endure. In 1999, Steven\u2019s older brother Cary killed four women near and in Yosemite National Park.
