This is a simple way to turn your \u201cdumb\u201d traditional smoke dectors into smart alarms.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> What we\u2019re discussing here is supplementing the regular smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home by configuring your smart speakers to listen for the alarm sound. Except for the rare combination units on the market like the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Enabled-Detector-Monoxide-First-Alert\/dp\/B077Y6CL7M\/?tag=hotoge-20\">First Alert Onelink Safe &amp; Sound<\/a> there are no smart speakers that can detect fires or carbon monoxide on their own.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Use_Smart_Speakers_Instead_of_Smart_Alarms\"><\/span>Why Use Smart Speakers Instead of Smart Alarms?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are a variety of situations where it can be useful (and economical!) to opt to use your smart speakers to monitor your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/S3000BWES-Protect-Carbon-Monoxide-Battery\/dp\/B00XV1RCRY\/?tag=hotoge-20\">a good smart smoke detector<\/a> connected to your home network is a superior choice. But if you follow alarm placement guidelines, the expense skyrockets pretty quickly. If you already have smart speakers and traditional \u201cdumb\u201d smoke alarms, this is a free way to make them smart.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/Public-Education\/Staying-safe\/Safety-equipment\/Smoke-alarms\/Installing-and-maintaining-smoke-alarms\">According to the National Fire Protection Association<\/a>, you\u2019re supposed to put a smoke or combination alarm in every bedroom, the space im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely outside bedrooms, your living room, near the lower landing or each stairway. You should also ensure there\u2019s one on every floor, including the basement. Google\u2019s smart smoke detector is a great product, but to outfit your average home would cost over a thousand dollars.\u00a0 By contrast, you can buy 3-4 nice \u201cdumb\u201d combination alarms like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/First-Alert-SCO5CN-Combination-Monoxide\/dp\/B000MXJ498\/?tag=hotoge-20\">this First Alert model<\/a> for what you\u2019d spend on a single Nest Protect.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in a situation where it\u2019s impractical or even impossible to replace all the smoke alarms in your home\u2014for example, if you live in an apartment with hardwired alarms you can\u2019t change\u2014then using a device to monitor when the alarms go off might be the only option you have.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Use_Your_Smart_Speakers_as_Alarm_Detectors\"><\/span>How to Use Your Smart Speakers as Alarm Detectors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Among smart home speakers, both Amazon\u2019s Echo platform and the Nest\/Google Home platform have an alarm monitoring solution.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, as of April 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le\u2019s HomePod platform doesn\u2019t offer an equivalent feature.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a shame because, as of iOS 14, the iPhone has a really great accessibility feature named\u00a0Sound Recognition. It listens for events like smoke alarms and alerts hearing impaired people to them, but the feature isn\u2019t available through the HomePod.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alarm_Monitoring_with_Echo_Speakers\"><\/span>Alarm Monitoring with Echo Speakers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"0i_YAgHqVTI\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/0i_YAgHqVTI\/hqdefault.jpg');\">\n<button type=\"button\" class=\"lty-playbtn\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"lyt-visually-hidden\">Play Video<\/span><br \/>\n<\/button>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n<p>For people with Echo speakers, there is a free function called \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=18021383011&amp;tag=hotoge-20\">Alexa Guard<\/a>.\u201d You activate it by opening the Alexa app on your phone and visiting Settings &gt; Guard. Follow the instructions there to\u00a0configure Alexa Guard.<\/p>\n<p>As the name implies, the \u201cGuard\u201d feature is intended to monitor your home when you\u2019re away. You enable and disable the feature by using the command \u201cAlexa, I\u2019m leaving.\u201d and \u201cAlexa, I\u2019m home.\u201d when leaving and returning home.<\/p>\n<p>When active the feature listens for the sound of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, as well as the sound of glass breaking.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also an advanced mode for Alexa Guard, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=18021383011&amp;tag=hotoge-20\">Alexa Guard Plus<\/a>, a subscription model that includes additional monitoring (such as listening for footsteps and doors opening and closing) as well as other features. Alexa Guard Plus is $4.99\/month (or $49\/year) if purchased as a stand-alone service, but it\u2019s included for free in the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fring.com%2Fprotect-pro\">Ring Protect Pro plan<\/a> ($20\/month or $200\/year).<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re using the Ring security system already, by the way, you should check out the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ring-Alarm-Smoke-CO-Listener\/dp\/B07M93Z1NT?tag=hotoge-20\">Ring Alarm Smoke and CO Listener<\/a>. It\u2019s a small battery-powered device that listens for alarms and sends an alert to your Ring system when it hears them\u2014no additional smart speaker is required.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Alarm_Monitoring_with_Google_Nest_Speakers\"><\/span>Alarm Monitoring with Google Nest Speakers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"HBBN9Mpo66s\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/HBBN9Mpo66s\/hqdefault.jpg');\">\n<button type=\"button\" class=\"lty-playbtn\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"lyt-visually-hidden\">Play Video<\/span><br \/>\n<\/button>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n<p>Google Nest speakers have a similar function that also detects smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, as well as glass break detection. No fancy name, however, the feature is simply called \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/UL-Google-SMB-support\/answer\/10227854?hl=en\">Sound Detection<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is no free version of Sound Detection like there is with the free and premium versions of Alexa Guard. It\u2019s a premium feature included with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/store.google.com\/us\/product\/nest_aware?hl=en-US\">Nest Aware<\/a> subscription ($6\/month or $60\/year).<\/p>\n<p>You can activate Sound Detection by opening the Google Home app, tapping on Settings, and then selecting Nest Aware. There you can select \u201cSound Detection\u201d and configure the feature.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Alexa Guard, there is no arming or disarming of the feature with voice commands. Once you enable it, the selected speakers simply continually monitor for the selected sound events.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Placing_the_Speakers\"><\/span>Placing the Speakers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In addition to enabling the feature on your respective smart speaker platform, consider speaker placement.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, you should have a smart speaker in every room that has a smoke alarm or it should have a line of sight, sans walls, furniture, or doors, into the room with the alarm.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t have to be the top-of-the-line option:\u00a0The alarm detection features work on speakers as modest as small <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07FZ8S74R\/?tag=hotoge-20\">Echo Dot<\/a> or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bestbuy.7tiv.net\/c\/156932\/671509\/10014?subId1=htg&amp;subId2=797638&amp;sharedid=&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Fnest-mini-2nd-generation-with-google-assistant-charcoal%2F6348880.p%3FskuId%3D6348880\">Nest Mini<\/a>, so now might be the perfect time to drop a few extras around your house.
