It\u2019s a bunch of baloney, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>A study published Thursday in the prestigious <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2114833\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a> found that the buzzy intermittent fasting trend is no more effective than traditional calorie counting, blowing the lid off the celebrity-backed fad touted by the likes of Jennifer Aniston, former <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> CEO Jack Dorsey and, of course, Goop queen <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/health\/we-tried-goops-4-week-intuitive-fasting-plan-and-it-changed-how-i-eat-now\/\">Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that intermittent fasting \u2014 or time-restricted eating, sometimes for up to 18 hours, aiming to shed pounds \u2014 did not actually lead to any more weight loss for obese people than daily calorie caps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA regimen of time-restricted eating was not more beneficial with regard to reduction in body weight, body fat, or metabolic risk factors than daily calorie restriction,\u201d the study authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time intermittent fasting, which often sees dieters forgoing food and eating only in a 6- or 8-hour window, has been lambasted for being a dieting dud. A 2020 study by researchers from the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) found that,  compared to people who ate normally, fasters only lost a half-pound more in 12 weeks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>For the latest study, researchers from Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China followed 139 patients with obesity, giving some both calorie restriction and time-restricted eating \u2014 only between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. \u2014 or others with daily calorie restriction alone for 12 months. Both groups were instructed to eat a balanced diet \u2014 1,500 to 1,800 calories per day for men and 1,200 to 1,500 calories for women<\/p>\n<p>While some weight was lost \u2014 about 14 to 18 pounds (6.4 to 8.2 kilograms) on average for both groups \u2014 it was hardly a stark difference between the time-restricted group and the calorie-counting subjects.
