While it\u2019s not a big problem yet, it\u2019ll be a huge one soon.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 10 million battery-powered vehicles are rolling around today, but some agencies predict that number will <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/global-electric-car-sales-set-for-further-strong-growth-after-40-rise-in-2020\">grow to over 200 million<\/a> by the decade\u2019s end. That said, Lithium-ion batteries remain a substantial environmental hazard and have a relatively short life cycle. Furthermore, the recycling process is complex, dangerous, and time-consuming.<\/p>\n<p>Your typical EV battery can easily\u00a0last for over 10+ years, and many modern EVs come with an 8-year battery warranty in the United States. That means Tesla, Ford, and others guarantee the battery for up to eight years or 100,000 miles.<\/p>\n<p>Most EVs on the road aren\u2019t that old yet, but they will be soon. As a result, we\u2019re not entirely sure what manufacturers plan on doing with the increase of dangerous, toxic EV battery material.<\/p>\n<p>How are old EV batteries recycled, or how are they stored while we figure out the best path forward? Are they safe, or are some leaking toxic chemicals into the ground? We\u2019re not sure.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla, the most popular EV manufacturer as of late, claims that it can recycle and reuse up to 92% of an old EV battery. The company has an EV\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/support\/sustainability-recycling\">sustainability and recycling support page<\/a> that suggests, \u201cnone of our scrapped lithium-ion batteries go to landfilling, and 100% are recycled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s promising and suggests that Tesla recycles and reuses everything, but that sounds too good to be true. Manufacturers everywhere are talking about how EVs are good for the environment and cleaner than gas, but what about the massive battery packs powering everything?<\/p>\n<p>According to the site <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/recycling-electric-car-batteries-an-overview-5188317\">TreeHugger<\/a>,\u00a0battery recycling is performed one pack at a time. Auto manufacturers use powerful glue to keep everything safely together, which must be broken down. As a result, the battery cells get shredded, heated up to the point they burn, dissolve into a pool of acid, and more at special facilities. It\u2019s a nasty job that releases\u00a0carbon emissions, but that\u2019s another topic entirely.<\/p>\n<p>The other problem is that Lithium-ion and nickel aren\u2019t even the most profitable part to recycle and reuse. That\u2019s actually\u00a0cobalt, an expensive material that\u2019s in short supply. Tesla <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/04\/22\/tesla-using-cobalt-free-lfp-batteries-in-half-new-cars-produced\/\">recently confirmed<\/a> that\u00a0half of its vehicles are now cobalt-free, and others are trying to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>For now, battery manufacturers are busy trying to figure out ways to cut certain chemicals out of battery cells or find the best way to recycle and reuse as much as possible.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_Happening_Now\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">What\u2019s Happening Now?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-98543\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2021\/09\/f7a6cb41.png\" alt=\"A pre-production Ford F-150 EV.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/media.ford.com\/content\/fordmedia\/fna\/us\/en.html\">Ford<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Considering most EVs on the roads are still young, the batteries inside don\u2019t need to be recycled yet. But, as we inch closer to that reality, manufacturers and companies everywhere are trying to figure out a solution.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Ford teamed up with a recycling company known as Redwood Materials, founded by Tesla\u2019s ex-CTO JB Straubel. The auto-maker recently invested $50 million in Redwood Materials and will give them a place to send old batteries while trying to be as sustainable as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Redwood Materials is located in Carson City, Nevada, and has a plan in motion with Ford and Volvo to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redwoodmaterials.com\/press\/redwood-materials-creates-the-first-pathways-for-end-of-life-electric-vehicles-kicks-off-in-california\">recycle EV batteries in California<\/a>, a leading state for EV ownership.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve also seen an increase in start-ups that think they\u2019re up to the task of recycling old EV batteries. One of those is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ascendelements.com\/\">Ascend Elements<\/a>, which claims it can turn old\u00a0lithium-ion batteries into new ones that are longer-lasting, charge faster, and are better for the environment. In addition, the company says, \u201cour patented Hydro-to-Cathode\u2122 process transforms today\u2019s waste into high-value materials for tomorrow\u2019s EV batteries \u2014 a giant step up in sustainability for the entire industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And finally, brands like Volvo and Porsche are looking into solid-state battery technology, which cuts out the lithium-ion gel.
