Kostarev reportedly agreed to a request from the government body to turn over certain user data \u2014 including names and addresses \u2014 later telling an associate he didn&#8217;t have &#8220;much of a choice&#8221; in the matter. However, another unnamed crypto exchange reportedly did not agree to provide client data to Rosfinmonitoring due to concerns about how the information would be used as well as the unit&#8217;s ties to the FSB.<\/p>\n<p>The Rosfinmonitoring may have been attempting to obtain information from users donating Bitcoin (BTC) to Navalny, who is currently imprisoned in Russia after having been found guilty of contempt of court and embezzlement in March. Many human rights groups including Amnesty International have alleged the charges were politically motivated as Navalny has directly criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for corruption as well as accused the head of state of being responsible for his poisoning in August 2020.<\/p>\n<p>However, in a Friday blog post, Binance <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en\/blog\/leadership\/binance--russia-openness-transparency-and-honesty-421499824684903741\">hinted<\/a> that the report was portraying a &#8220;false narrative&#8221; that provided &#8220;just enough balance possible to try to avoid a legal complaint.&#8221; The firm said it was &#8220;categorically false&#8221; that it shared user data with &#8220;Russian FSB controlled agencies and Russian regulators,&#8221; and had stopped working in Russia following the country&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Today, any government or law enforcement agency in the world can request user data from Binance as long as it is accompanied by the proper legal authority. Russia is no different [&#8230;] Binance has not entered into any form of unusual agreement with the Russian government that differs from any other jurisdiction.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Binance published the email exchanges between Reuters and its spokespersons, which were part of the research for the report. The firm also said would write a formal complaint to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> outlet, alleging\u00a0\u201chype\u201d or sensationalist journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to that statement, many <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> users seemed to be critical of Binance&#8217;s response to the report. At least one person <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bigblackjacobin\/status\/1517536595498442755\">alleged<\/a> that Russia\u2019s moves toward adopting pro-crypto regulations could be related to the reported attempts to gain access to user data, i.e., allowing citizens to use crypto in order to track transactions. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia likes crypto when US dollars are limited but hates it when it is used to fund political opposition,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HelloMrBond\/status\/1517514044185485314\">said<\/a> Michael Bond, a lawyer and Canadian national.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a haunting look into the pressure that the [Federal Security Service] can put onto the leader of a company in Russia, while org leadership outside of Russia has *no idea* it&#8217;s going on,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thezedwards\/status\/1517525489165893632\">said<\/a> Twitter user Zach Edwards.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Idea: cryptocurrency creates a decentralized financial system independent of banks and regulators, protecting privacy and the funding of political speech<\/p>\n<p>Reality: your cryptocurrency broker leaks Navalny supporters&#8217; data to the FSB without their knowledge<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tsXLzv74OB\">https:\/\/t.co\/tsXLzv74OB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 max seddon (@maxseddon) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maxseddon\/status\/1517543882120212482?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 22, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The report followed Binance&#8217;s\u00a0announcement of limitations for Russian nationals and residents in accordance with sanctions imposed by the European Union.
