With interest rates climbing, economists have cautioned Canadians against using their homes as \u201cATMs\u201d \u2013 borrowing against their rising equity. But Poilievre defended his wife\u2019s decision to leverage the value of the property.\u00a0 \u201cShe followed all of the rules and used the equity that she has built up through a very responsible and intelligent investment, to maximize the best interests of her financial position,\u201d the MP said Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Carrots, sticks:<\/strong> Poilievre, the presumptive frontrunner in the CPC leadership race, was asked about his family\u2019s rental properties while rolling out his proposals to use \u201ccarrots and sticks\u201d to increase housing supply, the <em>Post<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/poilievre-promises-carrots-and-sticks-to-get-big-cities-to-build-more-housing\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Speaking in front of a miniature house listed at $2.2 million in the Toronto neighbourhood of North York, Poilievre said he would require \u201cseverely unaffordable big cities\u201d like Toronto and Vancouver to increase home building by 15 per cent per year \u2014 at the risk of losing some of their federal infrastructure funds. Cities that go over the target would receive a \u201cbuilding bonus\u201d of $10,000 for every extra home, after it is built and occupied.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative leadership candidate has been hammering his message to remove \u201cgatekeepers\u201d ever since he got into the race, and has especially focused on the rising cost of housing. This time, the gatekeepers he seeks to get out of the way are municipal governments which, according to him, have been asking for more funds without delivering concrete results.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>No timeline:<\/strong> Meanwhile, <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> on Thursday offered no timetable on when new initiatives will be introduced as part of a Home Buyers\u2019 Bill of Rights to help first-time buyers enter the real estate market, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8776311\/canada-homebuyers-rights-bill-trudeau-timetable\/?utm_medium=Twitter&amp;utm_source=%40globalnews\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Trudeau highlighted measures outlined in the latest federal budget meant to address rising house prices and supply shortages, but did not provide clarity on when those measures will become a reality. \u201cThese are measures that are going to support families as we try to address this significant challenge in real, concrete ways,\u201d the prime minister said. Trudeau also pointed to the budget\u2019s commitment to double the annual pace of building in the country over the next decade, up from the current 200,000 units per year, stressing that fixing the lack of supply is \u201cunbelievably important.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Banned by Russia:<\/strong> Russia targeted 61 Canadians \u2014 from politicians to journalists \u2014 with fresh sanctions on Thursday over Canada\u2019s actions against the country for its invasion of Ukraine, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/news\/national\/russian-sanctions-target-canadian-premiers-journalists-military-political-staff\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Many of those named, including provincial premiers, military personnel, political staff and journalists, treated their inclusion on the latest list from President <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong> as a proverbial badge of honour. But others, such as <em>Globe and Mail<\/em> international correspondent <strong>Mark MacKinnon<\/strong>, saw nothing positive in the development.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m getting a lot of \u2018congratulations\u2019 replies to this. But for me, it\u2019s a genuinely sad day. I loved my time living in Russia, and made a lot of friends there (though many of them have left),\u201d MacKinnon said on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. \u201cI always tried to report honestly about the country. I guess that was the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Farcical:<\/strong> From a beach in the Caribbean, the <em>Post\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Sabrina Maddeaux<\/strong> has<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/sabrina-maddeaux-i-made-putins-farcical-naughty-list-which-just-shows-how-desperate-hes-become?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1650580376\"> a funny column<\/a> about being included on the list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Ukraine:<\/strong> Retired lieutenant-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> <strong>Trevor Cadieu<\/strong>, who is under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct, is now in Ukraine, the <em>Citizen<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/local-news\/retired-canadian-general-under-police-investigation-for-alleged-sexual-misconduct-is-now-in-ukraine\">reports<\/a>. Cadieu left the Canadian military on April 5, according to DND. He <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>led to Ukraine shortly after with the intention to volunteer for that country\u2019s military, multiple defence sources told the <em>Citizen<\/em>. He has denied wrongdoing. His alleged victim said she cannot believe he was allowed to leave the country. \u201cI find it shocking. What is going on here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Navy boss leaving:<\/strong>\u00a0Royal Canadian Navy commander Vice-Adm. <strong>Craig Baines<\/strong> will be retiring in a shakeup of several military senior leaders, Global <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8776434\/navy-head-criticized-golfing-vance-retiring\/\">reports<\/a>. Baines faced criticism last summer after media reported that he had gone golfing with retired Gen. <strong>Jonathan Vance<\/strong> while the latter was still under military police investigation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walking back:<\/strong> Ottawa is scaling back regulatory changes to reduce the cost of drugs five years after heralding them as a way to shave billions off industry profits, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-ottawa-scales-back-drug-price-reforms-that-would-have-cost-big-pharma\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The federal reprieve for pharmaceutical companies follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of court challenges, which the government either lost or remain outstanding. Canada currently lacks such a facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frequent flyer:\u00a0<\/strong>Justin Trudeau flew 127,147 kilometres aboard government aircraft over the past 10 months, the <em>Post<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/trudeau-burns-the-jet-fuel-flying-equivalent-of-three-trips-around-the-earth-over-past-10-months\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One year\u2019s worth of publicly available flight data examined by the National Post revealed the prime minister logged the airtime \u2014 equivalent to about three trips around the Earth \u2014 between his first post-lockdown trip in June 2021 and this Wednesday, when Trudeau touched down in Waterloo, Ont., as part of his cross-country tour hawking his government\u2019s 2022 federal budget.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>House reopens:<\/strong> The House of Commons will next week lift a COVID-related ban on public visits, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-house-of-commons-set-to-welcome-back-public-lift-covid-19-ban-on\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">reports<\/a>.\u00a0 The Commons chamber\u2019s public gallery will reopen on Monday. The public will also be able to watch committees. Next month, guided tours of the House of Commons will also restart for the first time since March 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Macklem talks tough:<\/strong> On a day when the Federal Reserve spooked markets with its tough talk on interest rates, Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem says he won\u2019t \u201crule anything out\u201d when it comes to the central bank\u2019s own interest rate path and taming Canada\u2019s out-of-control inflation, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2022\/04\/21\/bank-of-canada-governor-tiff-macklem-says-he-wont-rule-anything-out-on-rates\/#.YmH2FJPMLyu\">reports<\/a>.
