Using a couple of different methods, you can add text using a formula.<\/p>\n<p>If you search the web, you\u2019ll find that there are multiple ways to substitute, change, or replace text in Google Sheets. But if you want to simply add to existing text there are a few quick and easy formulas.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Combine_Text_With_the_CONCATENATE_Function\"><\/span>Combine Text With the CONCATENATE Function<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You may already be familiar with the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/447559\/how-to-concatenate-data-from-multiple-cells-in-google-sheets\/\">CONCATENATE function as it\u2019s available in both Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel as a way to combine text. This function lets you add text from multiple cells or strings in any order you like.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Concatenate Data from Multiple Cells in Google Sheets<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The syntax for the function is <code>CONCATENATE(string1, string2, ...)<\/code> where only the first argument is required.<\/p>\n<p>As an example, we want to add the indicator ID- to the beginning of our order number in cell D2. Using this formula, you can add ID- to the beginning and -1 to the end of the value in cell D2. Here, we want to add our customer\u2019s phone number in cell C2 to the end of their order number in cell D2 with a space between. As an alternative to CONCATENATE you can use the ampersand operator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>9 Basic Google Sheets Functions You Should Know<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll use the same example above to add ID- to the beginning of our order number in cell D2. The answer is you bet! We\u2019ll use the ampersand to combine the customer\u2019s phone number in cell C2, a space, and the order number in cell D2.<\/p>\n<pre>=D2&amp;\" \"&amp;C2<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-795119\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/AmpersandCellsSpace-GoogleSheetsAddTextFormula.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Use an ampersand to add text to the middle\" width=\"427\" height=\"97\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Like with CONCATENATE, the space is placed within quotes as if it was a word or special character.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Insert_Text_Using_LEFT_MID_and_RIGHT\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">Insert Text Using LEFT, MID, and RIGHT<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you want to add text to the middle of a text string within a cell, you could do so using the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/docs\/answer\/3098245?hl=en\">REGEXREPLACE<\/a> function to replace the text. However, you\u2019ll need a bit of knowledge with regular expressions, which has a steep learning curve. Instead, you can use the LEFT, MID, and RIGHT functions with the ampersand operator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Use Regular Expressions (regexes) on Linux<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The syntax for LEFT and RIGHT is the same, <code>LEFT(string, characters)<\/code> where you can use text or a cell reference for the <code>string<\/code> and a number for <code>characters<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>The syntax for MID is <code>MID(string, start, length)<\/code> where you can use text or a cell reference for <code>string<\/code> and numbers for the starting character and length to extract.<\/p>\n<p>To add a hyphen after the first character in our value in cell D2 and keep the remaining values the same, you can use this formula:<\/p>\n<pre>=LEFT(D2,1)&amp;\"-\"&amp;RIGHT(D2,5)<\/pre>\n<p>Our string is six characters long. So the <code>LEFT<\/code> formula references the cell and then the first character, the ampersand adds the hyphen in quotes, another ampersand adds the end of the string with the cell reference and the remaining five characters using the <code>RIGHT<\/code> formula.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-795305\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/LEFTRIGHT-GoogleSheetsAddTextFormula.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"LEFT, RIGHT, and ampersands to add text\" width=\"362\" height=\"115\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>With this next formula, we\u2019ll use all three functions to add hyphens after the first two and before the last two characters in that same string. You would use this formula:<\/p>\n<pre>=LEFT(D2,2)&amp;\"-\"&amp;MID(D2,3,2)&amp;\"-\"&amp;RIGHT(D2,2)<\/pre>\n<p>By inserting the <code>MID<\/code> function between the other two, we can return the segment in the middle of the string.
