“#Is de Blasio really going to bail out a donor again \u2014 at city expense?<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Is Mayor Bill de Blasio actually thinking of buying a school-bus company owned by a donor \u2014 and assuming its debts? Even he couldn\u2019t be that cynical, could he?<\/p>\n

As The Post\u2019s Julia Marsh and Sue Edelman reported last week, the city\u00a0is moving to take over some private bus companies,\u00a0possibly including one with ties\u00a0to a de Blasio donor. An industry insider says Reliant Transportation \u2014 whose CEO, Alex Lodde, donated $100,000 to de Blasio\u2019s political slush fund in 2014 \u2014 is among the companies under consideration.<\/p>\n

City Hall isn\u2019t commenting on Reliant, but if true, it would set a new low\u00a0for cynicism, even by de Blasio\u2019s standards.<\/p>\n

For one thing, as part of any deal, the city would presumably take on the companies\u2019 multimillion-dollar pension liabilities.<\/p>\n

Now recall that the mayor came thisclose to getting indicted for\u00a0his play-to-play shenanigans with donors who got favorable action from the city.<\/p>\n

Recall, too, that Reliant was also the only beneficiary of de Blasio\u2019s $42 million grant to school-bus companies. The money was meant to pay employees, after Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the court demanded reforms that saved the city millions.<\/p>\n

In any event, the\u00a0rationale for taking over any bus company is a mystery. Providing\u00a0grants and protections to\u00a0these companies has \u201cundermined the fairness and savings of a competitive procurement, and it\u2019s unclear that public ownership will yield any improvements in service and especially cost,\u201d said\u00a0Citizens Budget Commission fiscal expert Maria Doulis.<\/p>\n

Nor should anyone expect the Department of Education or even a city-managed nonprofit to run busing well, given the DOE\u2019s numerous debacles in creating routes and tracking vehicles over the last few years.<\/p>\n

The city is already spending $800,000 for a consultant to explore the takeover idea. That might be the tip of an expensive iceberg.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
