theorists and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/nationalbutterflycenter\/v4jla7bmp9-5536765\">shut its doors<\/a> for \u201csafety\u201d reasons, the organization said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is blooming, the mulberry tree is bustling with colorful birds, and we\u2019re OPEN again,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NatButterflies\/status\/1517874960508796928\">tweeted the center, which gets 35,000 annual visitors<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The center sued the Trump administration in 2017 over its border wall plans, arguing the construction would destroy butterfly habitats \u2014 but its opposition to the wall drew attention from folks like the now-disgraced Brian Kolfage, the \u201cWe Build the Wall\u201d fundraiser who recently pleaded guilty to wire fraud charges. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler\"\/>\n<p>In 2019, Kolfage tweeted false rumors claiming the butterfly center\u2019s director, M\u0430ri\u0430nn\u0430 Trevino-Wright was involved in human trafficking, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/02\/02\/national-butterfly-center-conspiracy-threats\/\">according to reports<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>In January, a right-wing Congressional candidate from Virginia, in the area for a rally, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tpr.org\/border-immigration\/2022-01-29\/kimberly-lowe-national-butterfly-center-attack-marianna-wright\">visited the center and had a physical confrontation<\/a> with Trevino-Wright after demanding to see \u201cmigrants\u201d crossing the Rio Grande on the center\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a week later, the center shut down.\n
