Joseph Dibee pleads guilty to arson&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>An environmentalist saboteur pleaded guilty to his role in a pair of arson attacks on animal-processing facilities years ago \u2014 as a part of a domestic terrorism ring known as \u201cthe Family,\u201d federal prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Mahmoud Dibee admitted to working with at least 15 others as members of the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front to destroy the Cavel West Meat Packing Plant in Oregon in 1997, as well as a government-run wild horse facility in California in 2001, according to the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>Dibee, who was indicted more than 15 years ago for his role in the attacks, pleaded guilty on Thursday to conspiracy to commit arson and arson charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conspirators, together known as \u2018the Family,\u2019 were ultimately linked to more than 40 criminal acts between 1995 and 2001 and caused more than $45 million in damages,\u201d the DOJ said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>Federal authorities said Dibee, 53, who spent years on the lam following his 2006 indictment, is an \u201cenvironmental extremist, arsonist and former fugitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2018,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/a644909e6d664b1080742a3473e3186a\">Dibee\u00a0was arrested in Cuba<\/a>\u00a0before he boarded a flight for Russia on an Interpol Red Notice, according to the DOJ and reports.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/madras-oregon-arson.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Cavel West horse slaughter facility in Madras.\" class=\"wp-image-22017519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/madras-oregon-arson.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/madras-oregon-arson.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/madras-oregon-arson.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>In 1997, Joseph Dibee and members of the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front used \u201cincendiary devices\u201d to destroy the Cavel West Meat Packing Plant.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Federal Bureau of Investigations<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the late 1990s, Dibee and his co-conspirators used \u201cincendiary devices\u201d to destroy an Oregon commercial slaughterhouse and meatpacking facility, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> release. In 2001, Dibee and others \u201cattempted to destroy\u201d a government-owned wild horse corral in California, according to the DOJ.<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to and during the attacks, Dibee and fellow environmental extremists \u201cheld meetings to plan arsons of targeted sites, conducted research and surveillance of the sites and discussed their planned actions using code words and code names\u201d according to the feds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conspirators designed and constructed destructive devices which functioned as incendiary bombs to ignite fires and destroy targeted sites,\u201d the news release read.<\/p>\n<p>During what the extremists called \u201cdirect actions,\u201d they wore dark clothing and wore masks and gloves to disguise their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earances. Four years later, Dibee and others in October 2001 tried to destroy the Bureau of Land Management\u2019s Wild Horse Corrals \u2014 a facility used to remove wild horses from public lands.<\/p>\n<p>Following a years-long domestic terrorism investigation led by the FBI, a federal grand jury in Oregon indicted Dibee and 11 co-conspirators in 2006. Dibee had fled the US in December 2005, a month before his indictment.<\/p>\n<p>One of Dibee\u2019s co-conspirators, Josephine Sunshine Overaker, remains on the lam after fleeing to Europe in 2001, according to the DOJ and reports.<\/p>\n<p>Dibee faces 87 months in federal prison at his sentencing on July 27 in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the plea agreement reached Thursday, Dibee agreed to pay unspecified restitution to victims of his crimes, according to the DOJ.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
