Macron cruised to a second term on Sunday, easily defeating right-wing challenger Marine Le Pen amid low turnout levels\u00a0in the country\u2019s runoff election, polling projections showed.<\/p>\n<p>According to preliminary results, Macron received 58.2% of the vote compared to Le Pen\u2019s tally of 41.8%.<\/p>\n<p>The election pitted the centrist incumbent\u00a0against far-right nationalist Le Pen \u2014 an ideological face-off that betrayed\u00a0France\u2019s increasing political divide.<\/p>\n<p>In a concession speech Sunday, Le Pen called her run \u201chistoric\u201d and a \u201cshining victory\u201d over the unprecedented turnout of right-wing voters, CNN reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great wind of freedom could have blown over our country, but the ballot box decided otherwise,\u201d she told supporters, adding, \u201cthat <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> is not quite over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Le Pen said the results would serve her party, National Rally, well in the upcoming June parliamentary elections, the outlet said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" Macron becomes the first French president to be elected to a second term in 20 years, CNN said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Macron, 44, had edged out Le Pen\u00a0in the first round of the two-tier election process, with 27.8% of the vote compared to Le Pen\u2019s 23.1%.<\/p>\n<p>Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon came in third with less than 22% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>The second-round vote on Sunday concluded at 8 p.m. in Paris \u2014 2 p.m. Eastern Time in the US \u2014 with low overall turnout at the polls by French standards.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Interior Ministry, about 63% of French voters went to the polls, down from 65% in the 2017 election, when Macron was elected.<\/p>\n<p>Macron had a slight lead in the polls going into the run-off, with a 51-49 percentage edge, according to one survey. <\/p>\n<p>But political analysts saw the incumbent as vulnerable, and alarmed far-left European Union leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, openly rooted for Macron. election, with Macron trumping her with 66% of the vote.
