\u2018mini\u2019 solar eclipse will blot out the sun this week&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The first solar eclipse of 2022 arrives this week.<\/p>\n<p>A partial solar eclipse will be visible over parts of Antarctica, South America, and the Pacific and Atlantic oceans on April 30.<\/p>\n<p>And while skygazers in the U.K. and U.S. won\u2019t get to see it in person, they can watch a live stream of the rare celestial event.<\/p>\n<p>Solar eclipses occur when the Sun, Moon and Earth align, casting a shadow on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>A partial eclipse takes place when a portion of the Sun is obscured, plunging a section of it into darkness when viewed from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>At its peak, Saturday\u2019s eclipse will see roughly 65 percent of the Sun blotted out by the Moon,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov\/SEdecade\/SEdecade2021.html\">according to NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Its visibility \u2013 and how much of the Sun is covered \u2013 will vary depending on where you\u2019re viewing it from.<\/p>\n<p>Partial eclipses last longer than total solar eclipses, the next of which won\u2019t come around until April 2023.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/eclipse\/solar\/2022-april-30\">timeanddate.com<\/a>, this week\u2019s partial eclipse will first be visible at 2:45 p.m. EST.<\/p>\n<p>It will hit its peak a couple of hours later before ending at 6:37 p.m. EST.<\/p>\n<p>The eclipse coincides with the second new moon of April, also called a\u00a0Black Moon.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch it on a live stream that will kick off on the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> channel\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qUbnEwEVsic\">Gyaan ki gareebi Live<\/a>\u00a0when the eclipse begins.<\/p>\n<p>Solar eclipses are relatively rare, with between two and five occurring per year. Solar eclipses occur when the Sun, Moon and Earth align, casting a shadow on Earth.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"partial-solar-eclipse\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Partial_solar_eclipse\"><\/span>Partial solar eclipse<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This happens when a part of the Sun is always in view, creating a \u201cpenumbra\u201d or partial shadow.<\/p>\n<p>A partial eclipse means the centre of the Moon\u2019s shadow misses the Earth, but it still\u00a0creates a spectacular effect for sky gazers.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of Sun which is obscured by the Moon depends on where the person viewing the event happens to be.<\/p>\n<p>This can range from a relatively small bite-sized chunk appearing to the Sun taking on a slim crescent-shape.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"annular-solar-eclipse\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Annular_solar_eclipse\"><\/span>Annular solar eclipse<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Annular solar eclipses are rare and considered as a sort of variant on a partial solar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>An annular solar eclipse appears similar to a total eclipse in that the Moon appears to pass centrally across the Sun, creating a \u201ccounterfeit twilight\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The event occurs when the three objects are not quite fully aligned with the Moon being vastly smaller than the Sun, and the Sun is not completely covered.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15584-solar-eclipses.html\">Space.com<\/a>\u00a0explains: \u201cDuring such an eclipse, the\u00a0antumbra, a theoretical continuation of the umbra, reaches the ground, and anyone situated within it can look up past either side of the umbra and see an annulus, or \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/tech\/science\/15213513\/what-ring-of-fire-solar-eclipse-frequent\/\">ring of fire<\/a>\u201d around the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA good analogy is putting a penny atop a nickel, the penny being the Moon, the nickel being the Sun.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hybrid-solar-eclipses\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hybrid_solar_eclipses\"><\/span>Hybrid solar eclipses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>These are also known as annular-total (\u201cA-T\u201d) eclipses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They occur when the moon\u2019s distance is near its limit for the umbra to reach Earth.<\/p>\n<p>An A-T eclipse usually starts as an annular eclipse due to the tip of the umbra falling just short of making contact with Earth; then it becomes total, because the curvature of the planet reaches up and intercepts the shadow tip near the middle of the path, then finally it returns to annular toward the end of the path.<\/p>\n<p>Of all solar eclipses, about 28 percent are total; 35 percent are partial; 32 percent annular and just five percent are hybrids.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-often-are-solar-eclipses\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_often_are_solar_eclipses\"><\/span>How often are solar eclipses?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Eclipses don\u2019t happen at every new moon.<\/p>\n<p>The number of times a solar eclipse occurs varies but usually between two and five take place each year.<\/p>\n<p>On average, a total eclipse occurs somewhere on Earth about every 18 months.<\/p>\n<p><em>This story originally appeared <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/tech\/5196276\/mini-solar-eclipse-blot-out-sun-watch-live\/\">on The Sun<\/a> and was reproduced here with permission. <\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
