Twitter has tremendous potential \u2013 I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed transaction will deliver a substantial cash premium, and we believe it is the best path forward for Twitter\u2019s stockholders,\u201d Twitter board chair Bret Taylor said. <\/p>\n<p>Trading of Twitter\u2019s stock was halted leading up to the announcement. Musk and board members negotiated on Sunday and continued discussions into the early hours of Monday morning, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/24\/technology\/twitter-board-elon-musk.html\">according to The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter was unable to secure a so-called \u201cgo-shop\u201d provision from Musk which would have allowed it to solicit other bids from potential buyers after the deal was signed, it was reported earlier on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Still, Twitter would be allowed to accept an offer from another party by paying Musk a break-up fee, the sources added.<\/p>\n<p>While the two sides were talking, an agreement was by no means a certainty, particularly after board members raised several potential red flags, including Musk\u2019s ongoing legal battles with the Securities and Exchange Commission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Board got some extra time with the poison pill but ultimately had to get to the negotiation table with Musk to get this deal done,\u201d Wedbush Securities managing director Dan Ives said in a note. \u201cWe do not expect any major regulatory hurdles to the deal getting done as this soap opera now ends with Musk owning Twitter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Musk shocked Wall Street when he announced that he had acquired a 9.2% stake in the company.<\/p>\n<p>Days later, however, he turned down an offer to join the board of directors \u2014 setting up a showdown that culminated in his hostile takeover bid.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/twitter-accepts-elon-musk-buyout-offer-06.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Musk said he wanted Twitter to adhere to the principles of free speech.\" class=\"wp-image-22028135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/twitter-accepts-elon-musk-buyout-offer-06.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/twitter-accepts-elon-musk-buyout-offer-06.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/twitter-accepts-elon-musk-buyout-offer-06.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Musk said he wanted Twitter to adhere to the principles of free speech.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Musk\u2019s acquisition of Twitter has unnerved many of the site\u2019s more liberal users while it has energized pro-Republican voices who want the platform to reinstate former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was banned by Twitter and other large social media companies for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 rioting at the US Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>While Musk has voiced support for less stringent content moderation policies at Twitter, he has not said whether he will allow Trump to return to the platform. Yet Trump himself claims that he won\u2019t return to the platform even if Musk lets him \u2014 and instead plans to use his own\u00a0struggling Twitter alternative\u00a0TRUTH Social, even though he hasn\u2019t posted on the site since February.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Twitter also drew the ire of conservatives when it blocked a link to a New York Post story about Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop just weeks before the Nov. 2020 presidential election.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
