And while <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/749107\/how-to-check-screen-time-on-android\/\">certain apps<\/a> can help you curb your phone usage, it may be time to just ditch the smartphone and use an old-fashioned \u201cdumb\u201d phone.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Limited_Features_Limited_Distractions\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_0\">Limited Features, Limited Distractions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s an app for everything, and that\u2019s the problem with smartphones. As you\u2019ve probably guessed, old-fashioned feature phones are extremely limited, which is why they pose less of a distraction than your iPhone or Android device. You can\u2019t spend two hours on Instagram if your phone doesn\u2019t work with Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Now, flip phones and brick phones are a bit more advanced than they used to be. Several dumb phones run on KaiOS, a lightweight operating system that supports a small selection of<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaiostech.com\/store\/\">\u00a0apps and games<\/a>, including WhatsApp, YouTube, and Google Maps.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"Ff2_s1BTH_o\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/Ff2_s1BTH_o\/hqdefault.jpg');\">\n<button type=\"button\" class=\"lty-playbtn\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"lyt-visually-hidden\">Play Video<\/span><br \/>\n<\/button>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n<p>This limited selection of apps makes your dumb phone useful without turning it into a major distraction. It also helps that dumb phones have small screens. You may be a champion at binge-watching YouTube, but staring at a tiny screen just isn\u2019t all that enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there aren\u2019t too many dumb phones without KaiOS. You can\u2019t really avoid the operating system without buying prepaid.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of features phones that don\u2019t support KaiOS, including <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelightphone.com\">the Light Phone<\/a>, which is so bare-bones that it has a black and white screen. Still, I think that most people would prefer a dumb phone with a touch of brains\u2014pulling up Google Maps when you\u2019re lost is a lot easier than bugging a stranger for directions.<\/p>\n<p>And just to be clear, using a dumb phone doesn\u2019t need to be a full-time commitment. With minimal use, your old flip phone probably lasted a little over two days on a charge; more than a smartphone, but that\u2019s to be expected, given that smartphones have large screens and addicting apps.<\/p>\n<p>Modern flip phones and brick phones have a crazy battery life. The\u00a0Nokia 3310 4G features a 22-hour talk time, and it can last for an entire month on standby. Most users will get weeks of battery from this and other dumb phones, even with regular use.<\/p>\n<p>Those who talk on their phone all day with a Bluetooth headset will see a more modest battery life. They\u2019ll charge their feature phone every day or two. Still, that\u2019s better than what you get with a smartphone\u2014it\u2019s insane.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you aren\u2019t interested in the distraction-free lifestyle of an old-fashioned cell phone, the battery life a huge selling point. The average flip phone or brick phone is just $50, and that\u2019s when you buy them new. A used flip phone may cost less than a trip to McDonald\u2019s, and if you\u2019re eligible for an upgrade, your carrier may even give you one for free.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the fancier flip phones,\u00a0such as the Alcatel Go Flip 4, can cost between $70 and $100. But that\u2019s still a pretty solid price, and you\u2019ll pay even less if you upgrade through your carrier.<\/p>\n<p>And despite their low price tag, dumb phones aren\u2019t crappy or poorly made. They have bright and modern displays, they support Bluetooth, and of course, they\u2019re built like tanks.<\/p>\n<p>The only problem with old-fashioned cell phones, from a quality standpoint, is that their cameras stink. You won\u2019t get iPhone-quality photos from a Nokia or Alcatel brick. Even if it works today, it won\u2019t work for much longer.<\/p>\n<p>Carriers are currently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/733116\/when-are-u.s.-carriers-shutting-down-their-3g-networks\/\">shutting down their 3G networks<\/a>, meaning that the majority of flip phones (including those made during the early iPhone era) are basically paperweights. They cannot make calls or texts without a 3G signal.<\/p>\n<p>Now, this situation may be disappointing to some people, but it\u2019s not a big deal. New dumb phones are affordable, have fancy bright displays, and can last for weeks on a single charge. They\u2019re much more enjoyable to use than some 15-year-old Nokia.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, old phone batteries have a habit of swelling up and can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/425488\/why-do-phones-explode-and-how-to-prevent-it\/\">become a fire hazard<\/a>. If you\u2019ve held on to an ancient phone, I suggest checking its battery for signs of swelling or bending. Your carrier may offer just one or two dumb phones, and even if you shop for an unlocked device, there\u2019s only a handful of options to choose from.<\/p>\n<p>For those who still want access to apps like YouTube and Google Maps, a KaiOS device is the way to go. The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B08Q1YWQQ9?tag=reviewgeek-20\">Nokia 225<\/a> is a popular and affordable option in this space, though I suggest the more expensive <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Alcatel-FLIP-Black-4044V-Unlocked\/dp\/B077F17R8H\/?tag=reviewgeek-20\">Alcatel Go Flip 4<\/a> if you specifically want a\u00a0<em>flip<\/em> phone. (Neither of these phones support Verizon\u2019s networks. If you want a KaiOS phone on Verizon, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/100317643\/type\/am\/sid\/115887\/https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/basic-phones\/tcl-flip-pro\/\">TCL FLIP Pro<\/a> is your best option.)<\/p>\n<p>If you want to avoid apps entirely, you need to shop from a prepaid carrier or buy a used 4G feature phone, such as the\u00a0Nokia 3310 4G (which was discontinued).
