“#Bryson DeChambeau feels closer to first major win after strong PGA Championship<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 Bryson DeChambeau made the best run of his career at a major championship, but still fell short despite shooting a final-round 66 to finish 10-under for the week and in a tie for fourth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere [were] a few moments where I kind of got a spur of momentum,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cIt was bunched and somebody had to pull away.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Collin Morikawa was that somebody.<\/p>\n

\u201cI played great golf this whole week, and finally was able to finish in the top 10, top five in a major, and that\u2019s an awesome accolade,\u2019\u2019 DeChambeau said. \u201cThe next step is to win. I feel like my game<\/a> is good enough. I\u2019m just proud of the way I handled myself, and that I was able to still keep executing when times got tough, and kept my head up high.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

DeChambeau called his performance this week \u201csuper validating\u2019\u2019 of the changes he\u2019s made to his body and swing.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I\u2019m] very excited for the future for me,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cMy driving I think is only going to get stronger and farther, golf-course-dependent, obviously. I hope in due time there\u2019s going to be an advantage that\u2019s out there. Hopefully it gives me a really distinct advantage that helps me win a lot out here.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Rory McIlroy took notice of \u2014 and some offense at \u2014 Brooks Koepka on Saturday throwing shade at 54-hole leader Dustin Johnson, whom he tweaked for having only one career major compared to the four Koepka has won.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard the interview and was just sort of taken aback a little bit by sort of what he said and whether he was trying to play mind games or not,\u2019\u2019 McIlroy said after his round Sunday. \u201cIf he\u2019s trying to play mind games, he\u2019s trying to do it to the wrong person. I don\u2019t think DJ really gives much of a concern [about] that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI certainly try to respect everyone out here. Everyone is a great player. If you\u2019ve won a major championship, you\u2019re a hell of a player. Doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ve only won one. You\u2019ve won one, and you\u2019ve had to do a lot of good things to do that. I mean, sort of hard to knock a guy [Johnson] that\u2019s got 21 wins on the PGA Tour, which is three times what Brooks has.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Johnson closed with a 2-under 68 but finished tied for second, two shots behind Morikawa.<\/p>\n

Phil Mickelson closed out the PGA Championship with a final-round 73 to finish 4-over for the tournament.<\/p>\n

But the talk about Mickelson since Saturday has been about his performance as a guest commentator in the CBS-TV booth after his third round, which had Twitter<\/a> buzzing with his expert analysis and zingers.<\/p>\n

Mickelson downplayed his potential stardom in the broadcasting world should he opt for that after his playing career, saying, \u201cFor somebody like myself that\u2019s never done that, having a guy like Jim Nantz kind of set things up and kind of stage what to talk about made it easy, because it\u2019s not like I prepared for anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just sets things up well, and then obviously to have a wonderful target like Nick [Faldo], that made it nice, too.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Mickelson had some fun with Faldo in the booth with a few good-natured barbs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had a good rapp<\/a>ort with Nick Faldo going back to when I played with him as an amateur in the Masters and he was really kind to me, and I\u2019ve always enjoyed his kind of wit and British humor,\u2019\u2019 Mickelson said. \u201cSo, we\u2019ve always had some good banter at the [Masters] champions\u2019 dinners. It was just an easy environment to spend an hour or so.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Based on their respective finishes, Matthew Wolff, who tied for fourth, and Cameron Champ, who tied for 10th, qualified for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. \u2026 In his first tournament since taking over the No. 1 ranking, Justin Thomas finished 1-under for the week after shooting 70 Sunday. \u2026 Jordan Spieth, after shooting 76 on Saturday, rallied for a 67 on Sunday. He\u2019ll have to wait until 2021 to try again to win a PGA and complete the career grand slam.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
