Musk added that he was in no mood to collaborate with Gates after the software pioneer confirmed that he \u201cdid not close out\u201d his $500 million short position on Tesla.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry, but I cannot take your philanthropy on climate change seriously when you have a massive short position against Tesla, the company doing the most to solve climate change,\u201d Musk texted Gates.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, who is said to be closing in on a deal to acquire Twitter, tweeted that the texts were obtained by The New York Times, though the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper did not report on them.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange of text messages was posted by a pro-Musk Twitter account, @wholemarsblog, which is run by Omar Qazi.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/bill-gates-new-york-city.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Musk claimed on Twitter that Gates sold Tesla short by half a billion dollars.\" class=\"wp-image-22026881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/bill-gates-new-york-city.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/bill-gates-new-york-city.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/bill-gates-new-york-city.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Musk claimed on Twitter that Gates sold Tesla short by half a billion dollars.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Rick Davis \/ SplashNews.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Qazi and Musk are co-defendants in a libel and harassment lawsuit filed by Aaron Greenspan, the founder of public records database Plainsite. Greenspan is a vocal short-seller of Tesla who has been critical of Musk.<\/p>\n<p>The Post has reached out to representatives of Gates seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>Holding a short position, or \u201cshort-selling,\u201d is done when an investor bets that the share price of a company is going to tank.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Gates <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/15\/opinion\/sway-kara-swisher-bill-gates.html?showTranscript=1\">told The Times<\/a>: \u201cIt\u2019s important to say that what Elon did with Tesla is one of the greatest contributions to climate change anyone\u2019s ever made. And you know, underestimating Elon is not a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arently Bill Gates hit up <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@elonmusk<\/a> to discuss \u201cphilanthropy on climate change\u201d but Elon asked if he still had a half billion dollar short position on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24TSLA&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$TSLA<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Bill said he hasn\u2019t closed it out, so Elon told him to get lost. The investor borrows shares of an asset and then sells the borrowed shares to buyers at market price.<\/p>\n<p>The investor sells it with the intention of buying it back later for less money.<\/p>\n<p>But Gates added that shifting to electric vehicles would hardly make a dent in the fight to combat climate change.<\/p>\n<p>He said what Tesla was doing was \u201ceasy stuff, like passenger cars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re basically not doing enough on the hard stuff: steel, cement, meat,\u201d Gates told The Times.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yeah, but I didn\u2019t leak it to NYT. He makes a great electric car. His rockets work well, so he\u2019s allowed to say these things.
