It was born seven years ago. I\u2019m older.<\/p>\n<p>Floor 102 was\u00a0Mindy Levine\u00a0and her Yankees president husband\u00a0Randy Levine\u2019s special dinner for me. Mindy Levine was remembering how it started for me.<\/p>\n<p>I was set for college at 15. But Andrew Jackson High required females to make their own white lawn graduation dress in home ec. I can\u2019t sew. After my mother paid a pro to finish it for me, the principal said: \u201cShe didn\u2019t make her own dress, she can\u2019t graduate.\u201d So: No diploma, college, graduating high school. I\u2019m living proof that you can\u2019t get anywhere without a college education.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, interviewing Prime Minister Nehru in New Delhi, an accompanying Library of Congress official inquired about my university. I said, \u201cI never graduated high school.\u201d Forget his reply. But I remember \u2014 and have since reported \u2014 Nehru pinched my behind walking in back of me.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, outside Vientiane, I\u2019m teaching English along the Mekong Delta. Parsing \u201cexactly on time,\u201d I had one student employ that precise phrase. She said, \u201cI want a dress exactly on time\u201d as yours. My teaching career ended.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Moving_on_up_%E2%80%94_slowly\"><\/span><strong>Moving on up \u2014 slowly<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Living in Asia, I\u2019ve written articles riding on an elephant, and washed from a pith helmet in Surabaya. And once, in trouble before cells, computers or the abilities of Mindy Levine, and needing a telegram sent for im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te help, I asked would this wire go out immediately. Answer: \u201cOh, yes, this very week.\u201d Back here, I negotiated an apartment. The building\u2019s board chair then told my broker: \u201cAs if we\u2019d let anyone like that gossip person live here.\u201d I moved elsewhere.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_schmear_focus\"><\/span><strong>A schmear focus<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I tried modeling. I had 57 beauty titles. How legit? One p.r. guy named me Miss New Jersey \u2014 and I\u2019d never been to New Jersey. Talk about big time, the Brooklyn Better Bagel Association crowned me Miss Bagel. A crown of shellacked bagels on my head. Mindy Levine actually found that photo, which was probably still stuck in someone\u2019s cream cheese. My first interview? The Duchess of Windsor. In her Waldorf suite. Years on WNBC\u2019s \u201cLive at Five.\u201d I recall one tight close-up while the contact lens in my right eye spiralled down my cheek. Anchor\u00a0Sue Simmons\u2019 Yorkshire terriers come from my same breeder. Once, closeted in a small room, door shut, with just her Yorkie, she smoked pot. The tiny 4-pound dog fell over. December \u201979, my very first Post story was the Shah of Iran. Reporters covered his hospital\u2019s sidewalk desperate for an interview. I alone had it. Front-page headline around the world: \u201cNY Post exclusive interview with dying Shah.\u201d The enormously grateful Post\u2019s payment to me? A handful of stringy flowers.
