push the price of Ether, but the plans have been beset by delays.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything you need to know about the long-awaited \u201cmerge.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_Ethereum_merge\"><\/span>What is the Ethereum merge?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The merge aims to make the Ethereum blockchain more efficient by switching from a proof-of-work (PoW) mechanism to a proof-of-stake (PoS) system.<\/p>\n<p>PoW, which was pioneered by Bitcoin, is secured by crypto miners solving complex but pointless mathematical puzzles \u2014 a process that consumes vast amounts of energy.<\/p>\n<p>A PoS system, meanwhile, is maintained by users staking crypto to process transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Ethereum currently runs both mechanisms. The merge will combine the two layers<span> in a single proof-of-stake-based chain. All the Ether cryptocurrency on the network will be unaffected by the switch.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_pros_and_cons_of_the_merge\"><\/span>What are the pros and cons of the merge?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>PoS proponents expect the merge to make Ethereum more scalable, secure, and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>The switch would make the blockchain\u2019s miners obsolete and slash the emissions of the numerous projects \u2014 including\u00a0many NFT platforms \u2014 that run on the Ethereum infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Carl Beekhuizen, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, estimates that the transition will <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/2021\/05\/18\/country-power-no-more\/\">reduce the network\u2019s energy consumption by 99.95%<\/a>. That could also convince more people to invest in Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>However, not everyone is convinced of the benefits. Critics have raised concerns about <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlyseKilleen\/status\/1504989181461741571?s=20\">the security risks<\/a> and doubts about <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/layer2\/2022\/04\/13\/reminder-the-merge-wont-solve-ethereums-scaling-woes-by-itself\/\">the impact on Ethereum\u2019s scalability<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet perhaps the biggest issue is the merge\u2019s endless postponements.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_is_the_merge_happening\"><\/span>When is the merge happening?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The merge was first proposed in 2016, but the transition has proven more complex than expected.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vitalik.ca\/general\/2022\/03\/29\/road.html\">defended the delays<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span>Switching to a simpler proof of stake in 2017, or even 2020, could have led to much less environmental damage (and anti-crypto mentality as a result of environmental damage) and a lot more research talent being free to think about scaling.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He added that the switch would finally h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en \u201cvery soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers expected this to happen in June, but insiders this month warned of further delays.<\/p>\n<p>Ethereum Foundation developer Tim Beiko tweeted on April 12 that the merge \u201cwon\u2019t be in June, but likely in the few months after.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It won&#8217;t be June, but likely in the few months after.
