It\u2019s a huge step for the company\u2014customers can now buy authentic Apple parts and access official repair manuals. But Self Service Repair isn\u2019t ideal for customers, and it gives Apple an excuse to double down on its worst practices.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the good stuff; you can now buy official screens, batteries, and other parts for the iPhone SE (2022), iPhone 12, and iPhone 13. Repair guides for these phones are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/manuals\/repair%2520manual\">now available for free<\/a> on the Apple website, and Apple will add M1 Mac resources to Self Service Repair by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Apple promises that iPhone parts will be available for seven years after the device\u2019s launch, and MacBook batteries will be available for ten years at a time. But Apple isn\u2019t doing a favor for customers, small businesses, or the environment. The company still has full control over how and when its products can be repaired, as it still uses serialized parts.<\/p>\n<p>Certain iPhone and Mac components, such as the iPhone 13\u2019s Face ID Array, will not work unless they match your device\u2019s serial number. So, to order parts from Apple, you need to give the company your device\u2019s serial number or IMEI. You then need to verify that you installed this part in the correct device using proprietary Apple software.<\/p>\n<p>This system makes it impossible to transplant certain parts between iPhones\u2014a process that\u2019s cheaper and more environmentally friendly than buying new components. It also forces customers to shop for parts through Self Service Repair (which charges $270 for an iPhone 13 display), and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifixit.com\/News\/59239\/apples-self-repair-vision-is-here-and-its-got-a-catch\">as iFixit notes<\/a>, it puts an expiration date on repairs. Customers, repair advocates, and governments have placed the company under increased scrutiny for its unrepairable devices, but Apple can now say, \u201cwe sell official parts and publish service guides for free!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a far cry from what Microsoft\u2019s doing. Not only has Microsoft teamed up with iFixit to sell Surface repair parts, but it\u2019s actively publishing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=rg\/116176&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fdownload%2F100440%3FranMID%3D24542%26amp%3BranEAID%3D2QzUaswX1as%26amp%3BranSiteID%3D2QzUaswX1as-DPjBYdERCUShrwk2jMAO_Q%26amp%3Bepi%3D2QzUaswX1as-DPjBYdERCUShrwk2jMAO_Q%26amp%3Birgwc%3D1%26amp%3BOCID%3DAID2200057_aff_7593_1243925%26amp%3Btduid%3D%2528ir__yzijdzo1eckf6zgj01xr6xi33m2xtbbsdtwfxhgl00%2529%25287593%2529%25281243925%2529%25282QzUaswX1as-DPjBYdERCUShrwk2jMAO_Q%2529%2528%2529%26amp%3Birclickid%3D_yzijdzo1eckf6zgj01xr6xi33m2xtbbsdtwfxhgl00\">repair guides<\/a> and teardown videos. Microsoft even assembled a Design for Repair team, which has made a noticeable impact on product repairability.<\/p>\n<p>Again, it\u2019s nice to see Apple launch a repair program. But this program isn\u2019t great.
