Children as young as one month to 16 years have been affected.<\/p>\n<p>While most cases are in Europe, experts said nearly 200 children globally have experienced sudden liver disease, while at least one has died and several others have required liver transplants.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the warning signs and what to look for.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_hepatitis\"><\/span>What is hepatitis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Hepatitis, in short, is severe liver inflammation. A vital organ for digestion and purifying the body of toxins, an inflamed liver could inhibit function and wreak widespread havoc on the body.<\/p>\n<p>While sometimes it can be mild and require no treatment, severe cases require hospitalization and can lead to liver failure and need for transplantation.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_causes_hepatitis\"><\/span>What causes hepatitis?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Medical experts are uncertain what is causing the outbreak, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-61220518\">BBC reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hepatitis is usually caused by one of several contagious viruses, dubbed hepatitis viruses A, B and C, the ones most often detected in the US, as well as D and E \u2013 but these have not been found in the cases.<\/p>\n<p>However, a possible link to a common cold virus \u2014 called adenovirus \u2014 is being investigated. The cluster was first reported in October 2021 at a children\u2019s hospital in Alabama with previously healthy youth ranging in age from one to six-years old.<\/p>\n<p>UK health authorities <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/increase-in-hepatitis-liver-inflammation-cases-in-children-under-investigation\">said on Thursday<\/a> a total of 111 cases of pediatric hepatitis have been identified there. Another 40 cases have been reported in Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain, according <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/around-190-cases-acute-hepatitis-children-reported-ecdc-2022-04-26\/\">to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2022-DON376\">World Health Organization (WHO)\u00a0announced<\/a> Saturday that 12 countries have reported cases of acute hepatitis among children, 114 of them in the UK. Their tally last weekend did not include breaking reports of cases coming <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/health\/liver-disease-mystery-1.6431872\">out of Canada<\/a>, and at least <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2022\/04\/25\/national\/science-health\/mysterious-child-hepatitis-japan\/\">one case in Japan<\/a>, according to local media.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_symptoms\"><\/span>What are the symptoms?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Jaundice, diarrhea and abdominal pain are among the most commonly reported symptoms along with fever, fatigue, loss of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>etite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, light-colored stools and joint pain. Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, is a telltale sign of a sick liver as it fails to properly dispose of bilirubin, a yellowish byproduct of blood filtration.<\/p>\n<p>As well as typical hepatitis viruses, doctors should test for adenovirus in patients with these symptoms and report possible cases to public health officials.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Alexander Weymann, director of the Liver Center at Nationwide Children\u2019s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/26\/well\/family\/hepatitis-children-symptoms.html\">told the Times<\/a> specifically that parents should seek medical attention if children experience pain in the right upper abdomen, where the liver is located, when the area is touched.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_steps_of_action\"><\/span>What are the steps of action?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The CDC says all physicians and families should be on the lookout for symptoms and report any suspected cases to their state and local health departments.<\/p>\n<p>To minimize risk, CDC encourages many of the same methods of prevention as COVID-19 which include washing hands often, avoid touching the face and mouth and keeping distance when possible.<\/p>\n<p><em>With Post Wires<\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
