When you\u2019re working with a text string in Google Sheets, you have a few ways to substitute that text without manually changing the string.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the built-in Find and Replace tool in Google Sheets, you can use a function to substitute text in your spreadsheet, and there\u2019s more than one to get the job done. With Find and Replace, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/447024\/how-to-find-data-in-google-sheets-with-vlookup\/\">you can search for and substitute text easily. Or perhaps the existing text varies in structure or format in multiple places. You can use the fourth argument to specify which occurrence in the string to change if there\u2019s more than one.<\/p>\n<p>Select the cell where you want to add the formula and the updated text. Using this option, you can replace part of a text string with another <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/792150\/match-function-excel\/\">based on the position and length to replace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Find a Value&#8217;s Position With MATCH in Microsoft Excel<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The syntax is <code>REPLACE(current_text, position, length, new_text)<\/code> where only the first three arguments are required, but you\u2019ll want to use them all.<\/p>\n<p>In this example, we want to replace the ID- at the beginning of our order number with ON- in cell E2.<\/p>\n<pre>=REPLACE(E2,1,2,\"ON\")<\/pre>\n<p>The <code>1<\/code> in our formula represents which position the first character we want to replace is in the string and the <code>2<\/code> represents the length of the characters to replace.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-795814\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ReplaceLetters-GoogleSheetsSubstituteText.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"REPLACE function for letters\" width=\"314\" height=\"96\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As another example, we want to replace a portion in the middle of our string in cell A1. Using this formula, you can replace \u201cNew Iphone Case\u201d with \u201cNew iPhone 13 Case\u201d.<\/p>\n<pre>=REPLACE(A1,5,6,\"iPhone 13\")<\/pre>\n<p>Here we were able to replace the uppercase\u00a0\u201cI\u201d in \u201cIphone\u201d with lowercase and add <code>13<\/code>, all in the middle of our text string. This is the ideal option for those familiar with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/661101\/how-to-use-regular-expressions-regexes-on-linux\/\">using regular expressions.
