He then documented and blacklisted wannabe patrons at his establishment. <\/p>\n<p>The Carmel Valley-based vineyard chef\u2019s controversial habit emerged after a tweet by Adam Reiner of Restaurant Manifesto on March 30\u00a0that read: \u201cHospitality isn\u2019t Googling your guests before they arrive.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when Jones admitted to revoking reservations if a guest doesn\u2019t measure up to his standards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisagree. We check <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trip<\/a>Advisor and [Yelp for] possible problems, then cancel,\u201d Jones tweeted, defending his <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> \u201cbackground check,\u201d adding, \u201c[Facebook] sometimes gives clues to make their visit unique.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The chef behind the now-closed countryside restaurant Cachagua <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Store \u2014described as \u201cbottom of the barrel\u201d and \u201cawful\u201d by some users on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Restaurant_Review-g32173-d2222490-Reviews-or30-Cachagua_General_Store-Carmel_Valley_Monterey_County_California.html\">TripAdvisor<\/a> \u2014 would <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arently use the online directory Spokeo to discover patrons\u2019 identities by plugging in their phone numbers, then troll sites like Yelp, TripAdvisor and Facebook. And I don\u2019t tolerate misbehaviors,\u201d he told Bon App\u00e9tit of his restaurant rules. He said his habit stems from an incident in 2015 when a group of diners left \u201cscathing negative reviews\u201d he claimed were \u201cfalse.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jones told Bon App\u00e9tit he\u2019d lie and say the restaurant was closed if he didn\u2019t think a diner fit the bill of his restaurant\u2019s vibe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes we just knew there was no way; they were clearly not suitable for coming to our place,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re not going to drive an hour into the countryside and be comfortable sitting under paper curtains on a concrete floor with a possibility of a feral Chihuahua wandering through. So we\u2019d call back and say \u2018Hey, I\u2019m sorry, the plumbing broke\u2019 or something,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Disagree. Most of the time people are great. But each restaurant can then decide if they want to deal with the tough customers or not,\u201d Jones said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>At his catering company, A Moveable Feast, he reportedly documents diners he banned for misbehavior in his notes alongside customers\u2019 wine preferences. Still, he told Bon App\u00e9tit, he knows most of his customers and doesn\u2019t have to be as extreme as he once was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very unlikely that anyone we don\u2019t know would make a reservation here at A Moveable Feast. So no, we haven\u2019t done it much lately. If there\u2019s a catering gig, we\u2019ll Google people and try and figure out who they are \u2014 not for negative purposes but for positive ones,\u201d he told the food publication.<\/p>\n<p>While doing a quick search on diners before they arrive has become common among some upscale restaurants, so that they can cater the experience to consumer preferences or dietary restrictions, blacklisting someone for leaving a negative review is less embraced, particularly at a time when businesses need all the customers they can get while the industry continues to rebound after COVID-related shutdowns.
