Confidential\u2019 and \u2018Donnie Brasco,\u2019 \u2018Good Will Hunting\u2019 and \u2018Titanic,\u2019 and \u2018As Good as It Gets,\u2019 \u201d producer John Amicarella told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd,\u201d he said, \u201cyou had \u2018The Fifth Element.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Amicarella was an associate producer on French auteur Luc Besson\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pqs9ycvKfD8\">futuristic sci-fi head trip<\/a>. Set in 2263, it sees ex-military cab driver Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) team up with a mysterious orange-haired woman named Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save the planet from a malevolent alien force, which is being helped by ruthless businessman Zorg (Gary Oldman).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sprawling action movie was stuffed with color, music and eccentric humor; it made a star of Chris Tucker, who played flamboyant TV personality Ruby Rhod, and enlisted comic-book artists to render a future New York City and designer Jean-Paul Gaultier to engineer cutting-edge costumes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuc Besson did everything I thought a great artist should do,\u201d sound designer Mark Mangini, who worked on the film (and just won an Oscar for \u201cDune\u201d), told The Post. \u201cHe hired the most creative people in every department, and just told them to do what they do, without any micromanagement. That, to me, was an epiphany.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five years on, Amicarella, who most recently worked on Roland Emmerich\u2019s \u201cMoonfall,\u201d is still impressed with Besson\u2019s work. \u201cIt\u2019s funny, it\u2019s imaginative, it\u2019s got romance and action, it\u2019s kind of dazzling. I said, \u2018To work with Luc? Absolutely.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_opening_shot\"><\/span>The opening shot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cYou have this languid shot of a spaceship <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing across the screen, reminiscent of the opening scene of \u2018Star Wars,\u2019 \u201d Mangini said. \u201cI needed to create the sound of a slow-moving spaceship, and I didn\u2019t want it to sound like a rocket or a jet. But, said Amicarella, \u201cwhat I saw was a great respect between Bruce and Luc. I would say, and I mean this as a compliment, Bruce certainly knew who Bruce was. He was superbly confident in that. She wore a bright-orange wig and an iconic outfit consisting entirely of scant white bandages, and spoke in an alien language Besson invented for the film. She also became involved with the director, marrying him later that year but divorcing two years later.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gary_Oldman\"><\/span>Gary Oldman<span target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/controversial-gary-oldman-interview-blasts-the-fifth-el-1798269710\">2014 interview<\/a> with Playboy that he\u2019s not a fan of the film. \u201cOh no, I can\u2019t bear it,\u201d he told the magazine, explaining that he had taken the part as a favor to Besson after the director had financed a film for Oldman.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Speaking_alien\"><\/span>Speaking alien<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" guys, they had to speak in this weird sort of tuba-like voice,\u201d said Mangini. \u201cWe used this budding <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, called vocoding, where we brought in actors to read the voices of the Mondoshawans, and we used those voices to trigger other sounds like brass instruments, to make the sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the bad-guy <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AqipzHYdMS4\">Mangalores<\/a>, \u201cWe used a similar technique, but we formulated [it] with cruder sounds like bears and camels and gorillas to give them a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OsJKdxPwZdk\">wild swing of a performance<\/a>. \u201cWhen we were cutting the film together, Sony Columbia was concerned about the character maybe being a little \u2018out there\u2019 for the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public,\u201d said Amicarella. \u201cLuc was like, \u2018No, this is what I want,\u2019 and he arranged a preview for the core audience at the time, which was teenagers.
