Leave feedback here: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ha2dWrvrUV\">https:\/\/t.co\/Ha2dWrvrUV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 City of Cincinnati (@CityOfCincy) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CityOfCincy\/status\/1519043046704308226?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 26, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But is nighttime riding really such a bad thing?<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8507613\/#B12-ijerph-18-10281\">2021 research<\/a> examined the effect of nighttime restrictions in Atlanta in relation to escooter injuries that resulted in hospital admission from June 2018 to August 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that the proportion of escooter riders injured during the hours of the night-time ban (9PM to 4AM) reduced from 32% to 22%, following its implementation.<\/p>\n<p>The research team also discovered that 19.4% of the injured riders were found intoxicated, which coincides with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6484536\/\">published<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31104782\/\">intoxication<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32783642\/\">rates<\/a> for riders admitted to emergency departments across the US.<\/p>\n<p>To tackle this issue, escooter operators, such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bird.co\/blog\/bird-launches-safe-start-keep-riders-safe-after-hours\/\">Bird<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.tier.app\/drinking-and-riding-dont-mix\/\">Tier<\/a>, have installed \u201canti-drinking\u201d features in their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s to discourage users from riding under the influence. But these features aren\u2019t really foolproof and it\u2019s still up to the riders to decide whether they will act responsibly or not.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond alcohol impairment, however, nighttime riding presents one more crucial challenge: limited visibility.<\/p>\n<p>The lights of escooters have smaller range compared to cars, which means that it\u2019s more difficult to detect obstacles, pedestrians, and other passing vehicles in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the rear lights present another disadvantage: they\u2019re positioned very low, just a few centimeters above the ground, which can make it harder for car drivers to notice them in time.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, more data is needed to accurately conclude whether a nighttime ban is necessary to increase escooter safety.
