estimates for quarterly sales and profit on Thursday,\u00a0despite inflationary pressure on consumers, the war in Ukraine and COVID-19 lockdowns in China.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of the\u00a0Chicago-based company\u00a0rose nearly 3% to $253.82.<\/p>\n<p>Pinched by higher costs for gas, rent and groceries, lower-income customers are starting to buy cheaper or fewer\u00a0McDonald\u2019s\u00a0menu items in some areas, Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski said in a call with investors.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201ccertain parts of the business and in certain geographies, there is a little bit of a trade down that we\u2019re seeing that we\u2019re just keeping an eye on,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to make sure that we continue to have value be an important part of our proposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the world\u2019s largest burger chain saw little resistance to menu prices that were roughly 8% higher in the first quarter versus the prior year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most US restaurant chains have raised prices to offset soaring costs for everything from worker salaries to beef and paper packaging.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s\u00a0commodity costs roughly doubled even since the previous quarter in the United States and Europe and are now as much as 14% higher for the year, Chief Financial Officer Kevin Ozan said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Even so, global comparable sales rose 11.8%, above estimates for an 8.2% gain. Total revenue increased 11% to $5.67 billion, beating expectations for $5.59 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The introduction of a\u00a0digital loyalty\u00a0program late last year \u2014\u00a0which now has 26 million members \u2014\u00a0also helped drive a 3.5% increase in first-quarter comparable sales in the United States, its biggest market.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts expected an increase of 3.3%, according to Refinitiv IBES.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s is losing roughly $55 million a month to pay staff, landlords and suppliers \u201cfor keeping the infrastructure going\u201d for its restaurants in the Ukraine and Russia, Ozan said.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s, one of the first Western brands to enter Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union, said in early March it would suspend operations in Russia after Moscow invaded Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After shutting restaurants,\u00a0McDonald\u2019s\u00a0lost\u00a0$100 million\u00a0due to the likely disposal of\u00a0inventory\u00a0in its supply chain, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Kempczinski said the company is analyzing its options in the region and expects to provide clear direction to investors no later than the end of the current quarter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/MCDONALDS-earnings1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"McDonald's logo\" class=\"wp-image-22068669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/MCDONALDS-earnings1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/MCDONALDS-earnings1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/MCDONALDS-earnings1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>First-quarter revenue increased 11% to $5.67 billion, beating expectations for $5.59 billion.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rosinter Restaurants Holding, which operates more than 200 restaurants in Russia including nine\u00a0McDonald\u2019s\u00a0locations, on Thursday reported a net profit for fiscal 2021 of 94.8 million rubles versus a loss of 1.83 billion rubles the previous year during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s\u00a0comparable sales in international licensed markets surged nearly 15%, despite renewed COVID-19 lockdowns in China that temporarily closed restaurants across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Excluding costs to support the company\u2019s business in Russia and Ukraine as well as other one-time expenses,\u00a0McDonald\u2019s\u00a0earned a profit of $2.28 per share,\u00a0besting estimates of $2.17.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
