It\u2019s former James Bond actor Daniel Craig, who\u2019s starring as the Scottish king killer in \u201cMacbeth\u201d on Broadway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His uninvolving and ponderous production (it opened Thursday night at the Longacre Theatre, but barred critics from publishing reviews till midday Friday for reasons that will soon become obvious to you) is a real Blunderball.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--review alignleft\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n        <span class=\"inline-module--review__eyebrow widget-heading-semi__label\"><br \/>\n            Theater review      <\/span><\/p>\n<p>        Two hours and 20 minutes, with one intermission. At the Longacre Theatre, 220 W 48th Street. Through July 10.\n    <\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Witches, regicide, beheadings and descents into madness are made as boring and convoluted as \u201cQuantum of Solace.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The cast robotically yells \u201cyay!\u201d and \u201cboo!\u201d at <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> delivered by other characters as though in a freshman acting class exercise; they lug around flashlights and smoke machines; everybody sits on two red Wayfair chairs; there\u2019s confusing double and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le casting. And the tragedy ends with all the actors eating stew, smiling and singing a folk song. <\/p>\n<p>In \u201cMacbeth\u201d!<\/p>\n<p>Director Sam Gold proves, once again, that he does not have a GoldenEye for staging Shakespeare\u2019s plays.<\/p>\n<p>Craig, a fine actor in the past, is a victim of all the directing detritus. Gold seems to have told 007 and company to act detached and indifferent in this oh-so-violent and propulsive of works. Kings and murderers sound like Iowans discussing soybeans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When the witches tell Mackers that he\u2019ll be promoted to Thane of Cawdor and then King of Scotland? Meh. \u201cIs this a dagger which I see before me?\u201d Yawn. Borrowing clothes from the Hanson brothers, they begin the show by calmly cooking soup downstage on a hot plate while speaking in unmagical monotone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen shall we three meet again?\u201d might as well have been \u201cWhat time is \u2018Jeopardy\u2019 on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No amount of analyzing Gold\u2019s pretentious ideas will make this play any more watchable, but the Witches\u2019 \u201cwhatever!\u201d attitude might have derived from a prologue he tacked on. (For this director, The Work Is Not Enough.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The excellent actor Michael Patrick Thornton, who plays Lennox, informs us that, in Shakespeare\u2019s day, fake witches were blamed for a bunch of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> ills and King James of Scotland obsessed over their existence. Everybody ignored the problems\u2019 legitimate causes and defaulted to \u201cWITCHES!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That witches don\u2019t really exist and are just normal people is a great idea \u2026 for a different play called \u201cThe Crucible\u201d by Arthur Miller. She has a mellifluous voice \u2014 a relief from the chorus of dry deliveries \u2014 and the requisite intensity for a woman plotting to murder King Duncan (Paul Lazar) in his sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Also committed and rebelliously energized are Amber Gray as Banquo and Grantham Coleman as Macduff. But, if the fact that Gold still got to helm this after his critically panned \u201cKing Lear\u201d in 2019 is any indication, he\u2019ll live to die another day.<\/p>\n<p>And so ends the so-so 2021-22 Broadway season.
