The tech-heavy Nasdaq index fell 536.89 points, or 4.17%, and the broad-based S&amp;P 500 sank 155.62 points, or 3.6%.<\/p>\n<p>Poor performance by major tech firms with trillion-dollar valuations were a key drag on the Nasdaq \u2013 with Amazon and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le each providing bad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> for investors. <\/p>\n<p>Concerns about renewed COVID-19 lockdowns in China and the looming possibility of a recession added more pain for the market.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon finished the day 14% lower after the e-commerce giant reported its first quarterly loss in seven years and provided a weak sales forecast for its upcoming quarter. The Nasdaq has shed about 13% in April \u2014 its worst monthly performance since the Great Recession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarket participants are nervous to begin with, so there is a quick trigger when it comes to these names when there\u2019s any uncertainty,\u201d Keith Buchanan, senior portfolio manager at Globalt Investments in Atlanta, told Reuters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen assumptions about these companies\u2019 growth fail to materialize, then there\u2019s definitely a \u2018shoot first and ask questions later\u2019 mentality,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The likelihood of aggressive action from the Federal Reserve to combat surging inflation has weighed on stocks for weeks. <\/p>\n<p>Fed Chair Jerome Powell has indicated the central bank could hike its benchmark rate next month at a sharper clip than the quarter-percentage-point increase it enacted in March.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/us-stocks-02.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Worried NYSE trader\" class=\"wp-image-22087752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/us-stocks-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/us-stocks-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/us-stocks-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Investors are concerned about the possibility of a recession.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The personal consumption expenditures price index \u2013 the Fed\u2019s preferred measure of inflation \u2013 jumped by 0.9% in March alone and is up 6.6% compared to one year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>That came after the Consumer Price Index jumped 8.5% earlier this month \u2013 its steepest rate since 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Investors also digested a surprise downturn in U.S. gross domestic product, which declined at a 1.4% pace in the first quarter despite economists\u2019 expectations for a slight gain. <\/p>\n<p>That news was revealed at a time of mounting concern that the US economy is headed for a recession in the months ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Stocks are struggling despite better-than-average performances from companies this earnings season.
