Here\u2019s why Netflix limits the quality of video on these browsers and what to use instead.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chrome_and_Firefox_Dont_Use_Hardware-Level_DRM\"><\/span>Chrome and Firefox Don\u2019t Use Hardware-Level DRM<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Netflix only allows higher-quality playback on Apple Safari and Microsoft Edge since the platform can make use of hardware-level <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download<\/a> Rights Management (DRM) on these browsers. Microsoft uses a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> called <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/media-services\/previous\/media-services-protect-hls-with-fairplay\">PlayReady<\/a>\u00a0while Apple uses a similar technology called <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/streaming\/fps\/\">FairPlay<\/a>. Netflix sees this as a potential risk, citing users attempting to capture and share content. Newer Chromebooks running ChromeOS <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/chromeos\/comments\/3vjchf\/netflix_now_1080p_in_chrome\/\">do slightly better<\/a> at 1080p, but they still miss out on Ultra HD and HDR.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_Edge_or_Safari_Instead\"><\/span>Use Edge or Safari Instead<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> is that you can get the most out of your Netflix connection if you switch to using Microsoft Edge on Windows or Safari on macOS. Both of these browsers support 4K resolution and Dolby Vision or HDR10 playback on their respective platforms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-798832\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/safari_netflix.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Netflix on Safari (macOS Monterey)\" width=\"650\" height=\"404\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Windows users can also use the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/798819&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fapps.microsoft.com%2Fstore%2Fdetail%2Fnetflix%2F9WZDNCRFJ3TJ\">Netflix Windows app<\/a>, but no native app exists on macOS (yet). You\u2019ll also need to make sure that you have the Ultra HD streaming plan, that your display supports HDR output, and that any external displays are using the HDCP 2.2 standard.<\/p>\n<p>On a Mac you\u2019ll need to be using an Apple Silicon processor or a recent Mac with Apple\u2019s T2 security chip, macOS Big Sur 11.0 or later, and the latest version of Safari installed. You\u2019re Not Alone<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s one caveat to using Edge (or the native Windows app) and Safari for higher quality Netflix streams, and that\u2019s a pesky aspect ratio bug that hasn\u2019t been fixed for over a year (at the time of writing, anyway).<\/p>\n<p>Users on both <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/netflix\/comments\/lzmtx0\/aspect_ratio_keeps_changing\/\">Windows<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/discussions.apple.com\/thread\/252898689\">macOS<\/a> have reported the issue, which is caused by the stream in question switching between resolutions. This causes the aspect ratio to change and for black bars to randomly appear on the top and bottom of the screen. Moving the mouse cursor normally fixes it, but there\u2019s little else that can be done by the user.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t a huge issue if you have a stable internet connection since you you\u2019ll be locked to a single high-quality stream. If you have a less stable connection (or share a connection with other people who may impact stream quality) then you can always switch to Chrome or Firefox for a lower-resolution but more stable 720p experience.<\/p>\n<p>Got the right browser and expecting Netflix in 4K but not seeing it?
