The typeface, created by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fontsinuse.com\/typefaces\/7854\/aki-lines\">Akihiko Seki<\/a> in 1970, utilizes sets of seven sweeping lines to form the shapes of the letters.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Microsoft\u2019s major product was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altair_BASIC\">Altair BASIC<\/a> for the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altair_8800\">Altair 8800<\/a> microcomputer, which ignited the personal computer revolution in a big way. This coincided with a major logo rebranding. In retrospect, the result recalls classic logos from heavy metal rock bands such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/logos.fandom.com\/wiki\/Metallica\">Metallica<\/a> (whose logo actually debuted three years after this one).<\/p>\n<p>Simon Daniels created the \u201cmetal\u201d Microsoft logo using the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fontsgeek.com\/new_zelek-font\">New Zelek<\/a> typeface (with some modifications, such as the extended \u201cM\u201d and \u201cR\u201d), and it can be seen in early ads for the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.z80.eu\/apple2.html\">Microsoft SoftCard<\/a> (which added a Z80 CPU to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le II computer so it could run CP\/M) and the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digibarn.com\/collections\/parts\/microsoft-ramcard\/index.html\">Microsoft RAMCard<\/a>, which added RAM to the Apple II.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Blibbet_1982-1987\"><\/span>The Blibbet: 1982-1987<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-799895\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/microsoft_logo_3.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Microsoft's logo from 1982-1987\" width=\"650\" height=\"200\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Microsoft<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After only two years with the \u201cheavy metal\u201d logo, Simon Daniels went back to the drawing board and returned with a more conservative design based on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fontsgeek.com\/fonts\/itc-avant-garde-gothic-demi-bold\">ITC Avant Garde Gothic Demi Bold<\/a> typeface. The stylized \u201cO\u201d in the logo, which is somewhat evocative of the hole in a 5.25\u2033 floppy disk, came to be called \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/archive\/blogs\/larryosterman\/remember-the-blibbet\">the Blibbet<\/a>.\u201d Others nicknamed it \u201cthe Death Star\u201d after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.st-v-sw.net\/STSWdsaccel.html\">computerized graphic designs<\/a> featured in <em>Star Wars<\/em> (1977). Microsoft used the Blibbet prominently in corporate signage and watermarks on its stationary.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> came that Microsoft had paid big bucks for a new logo design in 1987 (see below), pranksters Hans Spiller and Dave Norris at Microsoft <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.exmsft.com\/~hanss\/pranks.htm\">distributed<\/a> a memo and a pin-on button reading \u201cSave the Blibbet.\u201d But love for the Blibbet apparently ran deeper than just pranks in the company. \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">A lot of people collected Blibbet things and had collections in their offices,\u201d says Microsoft veteran Steven Sinofsky, who went on to become President of the Windows division. \u201cEven when I started, people still talked about the Blibbet, as it always had a bit of that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Old_AT%26T_Logo.png\">ATT<\/a>\/Death Star feel. There was a lot of attachment to it.\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_%E2%80%9CPac-Man%E2%80%9D_Logo_1987-2012\"><\/span>The \u201cPac-Man\u201d Logo: 1987-2012<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-799894\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/microsoft_logo_4.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Microsoft's logo from 1987-2012\" width=\"650\" height=\"200\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Microsoft<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Windows premiered in the Blibbet era (see above), the OS grew into a worldwide cultural and business force under the reign of a new logo introduced <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B2ImYGUhBgI\">on<\/a> February 26, 1987. The logo featured the use of lowercase lettering for the first time, and it also relied on an italic typeface (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fontsgeek.com\/fonts\/helvetica-blackitalic-regular\">Helvetica Italic Black<\/a>) and a special notch in the \u201cO\u201d. In 1987, logo designer Scott Baker <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/creativity\/microsofts-first-new-logo-25-years-pretty-damn-nice-143070\/\">remarked<\/a>, \u201cThe new logo, in Helvetica italic typeface, has a slash between the o and s to emphasize the \u2018soft\u2019 part of the name and convey motion and speed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The notch in the \u201cO\u201d reminded some people of Pac-Man\u2019s mouth, so it became informally known as the \u201cPac-Man\u201d logo. It incorporates the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fontsgeek.com\/fonts\/Segoe-UI-Semibold\">Segoe Semibold<\/a> font that the firm uses in its software interfaces. For the first time, the Microsoft logo features a symbol that stands alone from the logotype: four squares, colored the four traditional Windows colors (red, green, blue, yellow) as found in its famous \u201cflag\u201d logo.<\/p>\n<p>The grid is also possibly a nod to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metro_(design_language)\">Metro<\/a> design language found in Windows 8\u2014an OS that debuted just before the logo unveiling. Metro featured featured rectangular panels instead of icons. While Microsoft no longer uses Metro in Windows 11, it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/u4uTcZ49j-A?t=65\">borrowed from<\/a> this Microsoft logo when unveiling its new Windows logo in 2021\u2014taking the four squares and turning them blue.<\/p>\n<p>With some minor modifications, this \u201cgrid\u201d logo is still in use 10 years later. As long as there\u2019s a Microsoft, the company will always need a logo.
