And as of March 1, a seven-day average of 15 people died of COVID-19 per day \u2014 compared to just three or four daily virus deaths in late April, data shows.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement Monday morning, city Health Commissioner Dr.\u00a0Ashwin Vasan\u00a0explained he is raising the alert level from low to medium because the five boroughs had crossed the threshold of a rate of 200 cases per 100,000\u00a0people.\u00a0The expected new designation\u00a0is purely advisory and does not impose any new restrictions or mandates.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img spread means that New Yorkers are advised to \u201cWear a face mask in public indoor settings where vaccine status is not known.\u201d The green \u201cLow\u201d virus alert level instructs Big Apple residents to \u201c<em>Consider\u00a0<\/em>wearing a face mask in indoor public settings where vaccine status is not known.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img additional precautions\u201d such as staying away from crowded indoor and outdoor environments, while the \u201cLow\u201d classification does not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are at a higher risk for severe disease due to age, underlying health conditions or because you are unvaccinated, consider additional precautions such as avoiding crowded indoor gatherings,\u201d said Vasan in the press release. \u201cWe continue to strongly recommend all New Yorkers wear a mask in public indoor settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vasan urged people to get vaccinated and boosted if they haven\u2019t done ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The announcements came after in mid-April Vasan revealed that the Big Apple was expected to soon shift \u00a0to a \u201cmedium-risk\u201d COVID-19 alert level.<\/p>\n<figure
