Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay that takes a look at the cinematic influences in Paul Verhoeven\u2019s 2021 historical drama Benedetta.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>When it was first announced five hundred billion years ago that <strong>Paul Verhoeven<\/strong> was making a film about the lesbian, nun, and mystic Benedetta Carlini, genre fans the world over-pumped their fists and adjusted their wimples in excitement. Okay, maybe <em>specific\u00a0<\/em>genre fans did those things but I\u2019m assuming that if you clicked on this link I\u2019m in good company.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did the spicy historical source material feel perfectly calibrated for the Dutch provocateur\u2019s tastes, but Verhoeven\u2019s penchant for pushing boundaries and exploring taboos also made him a perfect fit for nunsploitation, a sub-genre that is exactly what it sounds like.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I\u2019ll admit that my definition of \u201cnunsploitation\u201d may be looser than most folks\u2019. But that\u2019s just because there\u2019s room in the cinematic convent for everyone in my opinion.
