\n Kim Foxx, the Chicago prosecutor criticized over her handling of the Jussie Smollett case, is tossing felony cases at a higher rate than her predecessor, according to a new report.<\/p>\n

Data analyzed by the Chicago Tribune shows that Foxx\u2019s office dropped all charges in 29.9 percent of felony cases in her first three years as Cook County state\u2019s attorney, compared to 19.4 percent for former prosecutor Anita Alvarez\u2019s last three years in office.<\/p>\n

A total of 25,183 defendants whose felony cases were prosecuted under Foxx saw their charges tossed through November 2019. That number is up from 18,694 over a similar period under Alvarez, the Tribune noted.<\/p>\n

The tossed cases involved some of the most serious charges \u2014 murder, sex crimes, drug offenses and attacks on police officers.<\/p>\n

The analysis also found that Foxx\u2019s conviction rate over her first three years \u2014 66 percent \u2014 paled in comparison to Alvarez\u2019s last three years, which was 75 percent.<\/p>\n

But Foxx defended her office\u2019s work as dismissing cases against low-level, nonviolent offenders, allowing prosecutors to focus on violent crimes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is always eye-opening to be able to look at our own data and compare it to my predecessor\u2019s past,\u201d she told the Tribune.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t reconcile what her decision-making was, and how they chose to (dismiss) cases in the past. But I will say that this administration has been clear that our focus would be on violent crime and making sure that our resources and attention would go to addressing violent crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Foxx came under national scrutiny after all 16 felony counts against \u201cEmpire\u201d actor Smollett \u2014 who was accused of staging a hate-crime beatdown \u2014 were abruptly dropped by her office in March 2019.<\/p>\n

Foxx had recused herself from the case \u2014 but questions have loomed over her contact with a former Michelle Obama aide before the charges were ultimately tossed.<\/p>\n

A special prosecutor was assigned to probe Foxx\u2019s handling of the Smollett case \u2014 and a grand jury indicted the troubled actor on new charges in February.<\/p>\n

His efforts to get the fresh charges \u2014 six counts of disorderly conduct related to false statements to Chicago police \u2014 tossed have been unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

The Tribune analyzed data from more than 810,000 charges filed since 2011 that were posted online by Foxx\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

The publication said information on the reasons behind the dismissals was \u201cincomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alvarez declined to comment to the Tribune.<\/p>\n
