At the time, Holder\u2019s lawyer, Deputy Public Defender Aaron Jansen, told <em>Rolling Ston<\/em>e his client was \u201cnervous\u201d but knew it was time to get the case moving to trial.<\/p>\n<p>Jansen also said Holder was experiencing \u201ca substantial mental health issue\u201d following the death of his mother and was \u201coff his medication\u201d the day of the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>The high-profile case was\u00a0originally scheduled to go ahead in April 2020\u00a0before being\u00a0postponed until early 2021\u00a0due to COVID-19. The murder trial was\u00a0pushed back again in May 2021\u00a0after he refused to leave his cell. Two months later, the trial was\u00a0delayed until December 2021\u00a0amid the assigned judge\u2019s retirement and Holder\u2019s defense attorney, famed O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden, stepping down after receiving threats to his family.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Holder pleaded not guilty\u00a0to one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of felony possession of a firearm in connection with the fatal shooting.
