class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The New York Times was blasted on Thursday for running a \u201chit piece\u201d suggesting that Elon Musk\u2019s childhood in apartheid South Africa made him indifferent to racism and that it could impact his content moderation policies once he takes control of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, who has vowed to allow more expression on the social media platform once his takeover is complete later this year, was a child when South Africa was \u201crife with misinformation and white privilege,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/05\/world\/africa\/elon-musk-south-africa.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur\">according to the Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Times correspondents John Eligon and Lynsey Chutel reported that Musk benefited from an \u201cupbringing in elite, segregated white communities\u201d in suburban Johannesburg, \u201cwhere black people were rarely seen other than in service of white families living in palatial homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times story surmised that Musk\u2019s being \u201cinsulated from the harsh reality\u201d of the system of apartheid may dull his sensitivity to racist hate speech that could be allowed to flourish on Twitter should he take over and institute his desired changes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"753\" height=\"1024\" quotes experts as saying that Musk\u2019s upbringing in South Africa may have affected his views on racism and could offer a glimpse into how he will run Twitter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Musk \u201ccame up in a time and place in which there was hardly a free exchange of ideas, and he would not have had to suffer the violent consequences of misinformation,\u201d a Johannesburg-based legal analyst, Eusebius McKaiser, told the Times.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter users blasted the Times story as a \u201chit piece\u201d and said that the billionaire\u2019s childhood during apartheid \u2014 when the South African government imposed a system of race-based segregation and discrimination \u2014 shouldn\u2019t reflect poorly on him.<\/p>\n<p>The Times story notes that Musk was \u201cbullied\u201d in school when he \u201cchided\u201d a white student for using an anti-black slur.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" blasted the Times for \u201cinsinuating\u201d that Musk was racist because he grew up white during apartheid.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Independent journalist Saagar Enjeti hit out at the Times for \u201cinsinuat[ing] [Musk] is racist\u201d even though the story notes that the Tesla boss \u201chad non-white friends growing up in apartheid South Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Enjeti also cites Times reporting that Musk\u2019s father was an \u201canti-apartheid politician\u201d and that Musk \u201cliterally left [South Africa] so he didn\u2019t have to serve in apartheid military.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Glenn Greenwald, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, was scathing in his criticism of the Times, accusing the Grey Lady of casting aspersions on Musk because of his Thought we were past that.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Musk left South Africa at the age of 17 and relocated to Canada.
