\n Libertarian: The Mail-In Voting Mess<\/strong><\/p>\n

Because of the pandemic, mail-in voting will become \u201cmuch more normal\u201d this November \u2014 yet, Reason\u2019s Eric Boehm warns, \u201cwe\u2019re not ready\u201d for it. Yes, President Trump\u2019s charges against the practice \u2014 that it favors Democrats and is fraud-prone \u2014 are overwrought. Even so, the country lacks \u201ctime to build out the infrastructure necessary for a full-scale vote-by-mail operation,\u201d forcing states to \u201cease restrictions on absentee balloting\u201d on their own. Without a nationwide operation, though, officials may need days or even weeks to count absentee ballots. Even though the practice is \u201calready widespread, safe and accurate,\u201d then, it\u2019s far from a \u201cguarantee of a controversy-free election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: The Unsurprising Floyd \u2018Surprise\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite some commentators\u2019 claims, nothing in The Daily Mail\u2019s \u201cpreviously unreleased body-camera footage of George Floyd\u2019s arrest\u201d is \u201cunexpected\u201d \u2014 or, National Review\u2019s Robert VerBruggen observes, changes the fact that Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd\u2019s neck for \u201cabout eight minutes.\u201d The video, which shows \u201cthe extent to which Floyd resisted arrest,\u201d would only surprise someone who \u201cdismissed or didn\u2019t read\u201d the police reports. The \u201creal issue\u201d \u2014 \u201cwhat the cops did after they got Floyd under control\u201d \u2014 is \u201cstill the same\u201d: Chauvin \u201cknelt on a subdued suspect until the suspect app<\/a>arently lost his pulse, and then kept kneeling for a little while longer.\u201d Whatever happens in the cops\u2019 trial, the case hinges on \u201cthe eight minutes we already knew about, not the eight additional minutes The Daily Mail uncovered.\u201d<\/p>\n

2020 desk: The Candidate Who Wasn\u2019t There<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAt first glance, Joe Biden\u2019s strategy of avoiding the spotlight is paying off\u201d as he maintains a consistent polling lead over President Trump \u2014 but, The Washington Free Beacon\u2019s Matthew Continetti advises, \u201clook again at the polls.\u201d Biden\u2019s lead has dropped to \u201ca 6-point margin,\u201d a lead similar to Hillary Clinton\u2019s in 2016, and a July CNBC poll \u201cfound a much closer race in the battlegrounds.\u201d In truth, the ex-veep\u2019s strategy has left him \u201coffstage during a multifaceted national emergency,\u201d and soon enough he \u201cwon\u2019t be able to hide in his basement\u201d: He\u2019ll \u201cbe center stage\u201d during his running-mate announcement speech, at the Democratic convention and in the presidential debates. \u201cYes, the race is his to lose\u201d \u2014 but \u201cothers have lost similar races before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russiagate watch: The Flynn Takedown<\/strong><\/p>\n

Steven Schrage may have \u201cinadvertently helped jump-start\u201d Russiagate, he reveals at Matt Taibbi\u2019s blog, and Schrage wants answers: The case\u2019s \u201cremaining mysteries\u201d are \u201ctoo important to be turned into a game<\/a> of political football or buried until after the election.\u201d Schrage was a Cambridge doctoral student under anti-Trump FBI informant Stefan Halper, who \u201ccarries himself with grandiose airs, evoking fictional anti-heroes like Ignatius O\u2019Reilly of \u2018Confederacy of Dunces\u2019 or Shakespeare\u2019s Falstaff.\u201d Five days after the Jan. 5, 2017, Oval Office meeting at which President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and others discussed Michael Flynn, the incoming national-security adviser, Halper told Schrage, \u201cI don\u2019t think Flynn\u2019s going to be around long,\u201d something \u201che had no independent reason to know.\u201d Those \u201cunder government investigation for abuses of power\u201d have \u201cavoided hard questions,\u201d but Americans \u201cdeserve to know as soon as possible before the election\u201d if anyone \u201cgrossly abused national-security powers to upend democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: Does Biden\u2019s Veep Matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speculation about Joe Biden\u2019s choice of running mate has turned into a Swamp \u201csport,\u201d The Week\u2019s Matthew Walther sneers. The supposed contenders are all \u201cplausible,\u201d but the question \u201cis whether it really matters\u201d to the outcome in November. Fact is, \u201cin every election cycle, we tend to overstate the importance of the number-two spot on the ticket. The truth is that it rarely matters; most voters have made up their minds long before such announcements are made, and even seemingly commonsensical gambits like choosing senators or governors from crucial swing states rarely has a discernible impact on the outcome of elections.\u201d The most divisive president in history, the incumbent, has led the vast majority of voters to make up their minds, and \u201cno one who was prepared to vote for Biden will re-evaluate\u201d based on his veep pick.<\/p>\n
