Needle drops on <em>Laguna Beach<\/em>, for example, included songs by Hilary Duff, Dashboard Confessional, and All-American Rejects. Its spinoff <em>The Hills<\/em> featured songs by Pink, Rihanna, and, of course, Natasha Bedingfield.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s <em>Selling Sunset<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Like many other reality shows of the 2010s and 2020s \u2014 <em>Love Is Blind<\/em>, <em>Bling Empire<\/em>, <em>Married at First Sight<\/em>, <em>12 Dates of Christmas,<\/em> and countless others \u2014 <em>Selling Sunset<\/em> uses music that isn\u2019t recognizable and is thus cheap to license. Oh, and some of the songwriters behind these tracks seem to have no illusions that they\u2019re poet-laureates of pop. Read on to learn more about the music behind <em>Selling Sunset<\/em> and other reality hits\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CThe_songs_are_fun_and_they_tend_to_have_somewhat_of_a_message_in_them%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cThe songs are fun, and they tend to have somewhat of a message in them.\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Carrie Hughes, the show\u2019s music supervisor, told <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/davidmack\/selling-sunset-songs-music\">BuzzFeed News<\/a><\/em> this December that she looks for songs that hit one of two styles of female empowerment: \u201cOne is just \u2018helping all women,\u2019 \u2018we\u2019re great,\u2019 \u2018we can do this,\u2019\u201d she said, \u201cand then there\u2019s more feisty, like, \u2018I\u2019m better than you\u2019 vibes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And <em>Selling Sunset<\/em> creator Adam DiVello described the intent behind the show\u2019s music in an interview with <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/6171180\/selling-sunset-music-adam-divello-interview\">TIME<\/a><\/em> last month. \u201cYou try to make it fun and aspirational,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s also dramatic, so we use the music to help tell those stories. In most cases the songs are fun, and they tend to have somewhat of a message in them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes that message gets a little on-the-nose, though, as Twitter user @rianphin <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rianphin\/status\/1472000652503044099\">pointed out<\/a> in December: \u201c<em>Selling Sunset<\/em> music [is] so funny. They walk down the street, and the music is like, \u2018Walking down the streeeeeeeet, boss girl walkingggg.\u2019 They have a bad date, the song is like, \u2018Just left a bad date, I\u2019m a bad bitchhhh, whoaaaaa.\u2019 Lol, how is it so specific?\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" style=\"max-width: 605px; min-width: 325px;\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jackremmington\/video\/7090212815197179141\" data-video-id=\"7090212815197179141\">\n<section><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"@jackremmington\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jackremmington\">@jackremmington<\/a> I\u2019m quite obsessed <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"sellingsunset\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/sellingsunset\">#sellingsunset<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c original sound - jack rem x\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/original-sound-7090212810549922566\">\u266c original sound \u2013 jack rem x<\/a><\/section>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>DiVello also created <em>The Hills<\/em>, the music of which served a far different purpose. \u201cWhen we did <em>The Hills<\/em>, obviously that show didn\u2019t have interviews, it didn\u2019t have people talking to the camera, so we really needed to rely on music to help tell the story. And that show, much more than <em>Selling Sunset<\/em>, we would rely on lyrics telling the viewer what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CLike_funny_but_also_dramatic%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cLike, funny, but also dramatic.\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When reality TV producers don\u2019t need a soundtrack\u2019s lyrics to convey emotion, it\u2019s often the instrumentation that does that work. Take the music scores of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.signaturetracks.com\/\">Signature Tracks<\/a>, the company founded by Russell Howard, David Lasman, and Adam Malka.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve watched <em>Keeping Up With the Kardashians<\/em>, <em>The Bachelor<\/em>, or <em>The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills<\/em>, you\u2019ve likely heard songs by Signature Tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Malka told <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/p\/the-music-on-reality-tv-shows-like-kuwtk-pump-rules-is-actually-way-more-important-than-you-realize-12137476\">Bustle<\/a><\/em> in 2018 that the \u201cpretty extensive process\u201d of crafting each show\u2019s sound starts with the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> premiere. \u201cOnce we\u2019ve locked the first episode [of a new series], and the network has approved it, we usually have a very solid sound palette that we can then implement in each show,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lasman, meanwhile, explained that the team takes \u201ccreative direction\u201d from producers and amps up the emotions of a given scene \u2014 even if it\u2019s \u201clike, funny, but also dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vanderpump Rules: Lala and James Fight Over...Pasta? (Season 6, Episode 6) | Bravo\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VnkHk9Wvp6E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Howard, the company\u2019s head composer, knows how to score drama \u2014 \u201cD-minor is probably everything that\u2019s ever been composed in heavy tension,\u201d he told <em>Bustle<\/em> \u2014 and comedy \u2014 \u201cFor me, a comedy cue is in \u2026 the [beats per minute] of 85.\u201d He also switches up instruments \u2014 to give <em>Vanderpump Rules<\/em> a younger-skewing vibe than <em>RHOBH<\/em>, for example. (\u201cCertain synths and EDM sounds, but not overbearing,\u201d he said of the <em>Vanderpump<\/em> palette.)<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CWe_know_this_is_garbage%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>\u201cWe know this is garbage.\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If there were People\u2019s Choice Awards for trashy reality-TV music, \u201cI Got Mine\u201d would be a frontrunner. That song made its <em>Selling Sunset<\/em> debut in Season 4 as viewers met Christine Quinn, its lyrics matching her onscreen persona: \u201cTake my name out of your mouth \/ I don\u2019t want to hear you talking when you\u2019re around \/ Cause everywhere I go it\u2019s like you\u2019re always there \/ But I don\u2019t want to hear it \/ \u2018Cause everybody wants a piece of what I got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"girl fieri - I Got Mine (Selling Sunset S4E1)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/25zYUdPAM8E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI Got Mine\u201d is the work of Girl Fieri, a group that musicians Colby Lapolla and Michael McQuaid formed to create music ready-made for TV licensing. Girl Fieri is one of countless real recording acts that Hughes uses as she looks for up to 150 songs per season, according to <em>BuzzFeed <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a><\/em>. And because <em>Selling Sunset<\/em> requires so much music, Hughes can\u2019t afford household names for the soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>(Other times, reality shows will use A-list songs in the U.S. broadcast and then swap in tracks by session singers for the international broadcasts to avoid expensive licensing fees. TikTok user @julespaigee <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@julespaigee\/video\/6964562426968673542\">detailed this practice last May<\/a>, saying she was hired to create a song to replace the Selena Gomez track \u201cFetish\u201d in an episode of <em>Siesta Key<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>And when music supervisors are working with strict budgets, they rely on little-known groups like Girl Fieri, a group that molds their music to be \u201ca little more TV-friendly,\u201d as Lapolla explained to the site.<\/p>\n<p>Lapolla also said that <em>Selling Sunset<\/em> is \u201csuch well-curated trash.\u201d And to a certain extent, the same could be said for \u201cI Got Mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s \u2018gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss\u2019 vibes, 100 percent,\u201d Lapolla said of the song. \u201cIt\u2019s been very funny to watch Twitter, and I feel like so many people have been talking about the music.
