But it\u2019s hard to escape. Mother\u2019s Day is one of the biggest retail holidays in the U.S., and Americans are expected to spend a record $31.7 billion on their moms this year, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/topics\/holiday-and-seasonal-trends\/mothers-day\" class=\"icon none\">according to the National Retail Federation<\/a>. In fact, Hallmark estimates people <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/corporate.hallmark.com\/holidays-occasions\/mothers-day\/\" class=\"icon none\">send 113 million Mother\u2019s Day cards<\/a> each year. So the mother of all well-meaning, well-oiled marketing machines is bombarding our inboxes, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>-media feeds, websites and TV shows this time of year \u2014 which is really, really hard on the kids grieving our moms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first year after I lost my mom, I remember rolling my eyes at all the ads, deleting all the emails before I really read them, or changing the channel, and being like, \u2018Will it ever end!\u2019 \u201d said Jessica Buckley, 41, from Long Island, whose mother also died from cancer several years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a tough time,\u201d agreed Simona Rosekelly, 37, in Washington, D.C., who lost her mother several years ago, as well. \u201cThe sales ads, commercials, you try turn a blind eye to \u2026 but then everyone updates their Facebook<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.17%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       profile pics to show their moms, or posts pics of mom. I just go to ground on the day of, avoid social media. The World Health Organization has warned that the global death toll is around 15 million people.<\/p>\n<p>And COVID-19 can exacerbate the pain in other ways. Kristin Bianchi, a licensed psychologist at the Center for Anxiety and Behavioral Change, told MarketWatch that the pandemic has made the grieving process feel \u201ceven lonelier.\u201d Some people are still staying home and isolating because they are immunocompromised, or they live in areas where COVID cases and hospitalizations continue to climb. \u201cWe don\u2019t have access to the type of physical contact and support upon which we rely to get through times of loss,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>So she encourages those in mourning during the pandemic to \u201clet people in\u201d as much as possible, even if that means calling someone or Zooming with someone to just sit and cry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more: <\/strong>Grieving in the midst of the coronavirus \u2014 what to know and how to help others<\/p>\n<p>Mother\u2019s Day isn\u2019t the only emotional minefield among holidays if you\u2019ve lost a parent; there\u2019s also Father\u2019s Day, coming up next month, as well as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah to consider. And if you\u2019re a mom who\u2019s lost a child, or a woman who can\u2019t conceive, this weekend can also trigger a tsunami of sadness.<\/p>\n<p>Since completely avoiding these holidays is impossible, grief counselors suggest meeting them head-on in a way that feels comfortable to you and to your family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe discomfort and the sadness is going to stay, because you miss her. But you can counteract that physical loss by giving her presence, even if you can\u2019t give her presents,\u201d Allison Gilbert, grief expert and author of \u201cPassed and Present: Keeping Memories of Loved Ones Alive,\u201d told MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncorporate her into the day, because she\u2019s still your mom, and your relationship is still important to you,\u201d she explained. \u201cTake a beat to look at photographs. Email or call someone to talk about her. Put up a Facebook post remembering her. Or even just say her name out loud. Or we toast her with Baileys Irish Cream, one of her favorite adult beverages, and play her favorite songs by Wilco and the Shins, and swap stories about her.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Buckley also likes to go to the beach with her husband and kids on Mother\u2019s Day. <\/p>\n<p>Rosekelly once got a tattoo of forget-me-not flowers to honor her mom. And sometimes, she\u2019ll make a cup of tea, sit with a framed picture of her mother, and \u201ccatch her up\u201d \u2014 the way they used to get together when Rosekelly would come home to visit. (I\u2019ve tried this a few times, myself, such as on Mom\u2019s birthday, or the day after I got engaged; sipping coffee in front of her urn and filling her in on everything going on. And it\u2019s hurt, but it\u2019s also felt cathartic.
