A second series, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt14586350\/\">\u201cLove and Death,\u201d<\/a> starring Elizabeth Olsen as Montgomery, will premiere on HBO later this year. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a story made for dramatization, with a rivalry between two women in a small town, subsumed desires and the pressure to fit into \u201cperfect wife and mother\u201d roles. He called neighbors and asked them to check on Betty \u2014 and then reached out to Montgomery, his close confidante. She said she had gone to the house earlier to pick up the Gores\u2019 older daughter\u2019s bathing suit, because the girls were having a sleepover at the Montgomerys\u2019 that night, but that nothing was amiss.<\/p>\n<p>When the neighbors finally got into Gore\u2019s house, they discovered the baby crying in her crib \u2014 and Betty\u2019s blood-covered body in the utility room. Initially, they thought she had been shot. Then the police discovered a 3-foot ax near the body.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, they would learn Betty had been struck with the ax 41 times \u2014 40 of the strikes occurring <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/the-real-story-behind-candy\/\">while her heart was still beating<\/a>. How did it come to this? The women had been friendly, and their daughters were best friends. Montgomery was the one who had had the affair, which she and Allan had gone to great lengths to keep a secret because they didn\u2019t want to hurt Betty.<\/p>\n<p>The 1984 true crime book \u201cEvidence of Love,\u201d by Texas journalists John Bloom and Jim Atkinson, covered the case and reportedly inspired both shows. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/news-politics\/love-and-death-in-silicon-prairie-part-i-candy-montgomerys-affair\/\">Excerpted<\/a> by Texas Monthly, it tells the story of Montgomery\u2019s boredom in her marriage, and of Allan\u2019s marriage to Betty, who was strict and awkward to the extent that she never fit in with the other women at church, overwhelmed with a new baby at home and resentful of her husband\u2019s business trips.<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery had meticulously researched and planned an affair with Gore, and they enacted a long list of rules for it. When she\u2019d admitted to it, but insisted it was long over, Betty attacked her with the ax, she said. Montgomery had fought back but tried to escape \u2014 until Betty whispered \u201cshhh,\u201d which, the defense claimed, sent her into a dissociative state connected to an adolescent memory of a mother who insisted Montgomery stay ladylike at all times. According to a psychiatrist\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/news-politics\/love-and-death-in-silicon-prairie-part-ii-the-killing-of-betty-gore\/\">transcription of his hypnotism<\/a> of Montgomery, she had revealed this connection: \u201cMy mother took me to the hospital,\u201d she told him. \u201cWhat did your mother say?\u201d \u201cShhhh.\u201d \u201cDid what?\u201d \u201cShhhh.\u201d \u201cWhat did she say?\u201d \u201cShhhh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery was found <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1980\/10\/30\/Texas-woman-declared-innocent-in-hacking-death-of-friend\/3030341730000\/?u3L=1\">not guilty of murder<\/a>, with the jury ruling she\u2019d acted in self-defense, despite the shocking amount of times she\u2019d hit Betty with the ax. <\/p>\n<p>Gruesome crime aside, Biel has said Montgomery embodies a compelling narrative about womanhood.\u00a0\u201cThere were actually a lot of things I could relate to about Candy,\u201d Biel<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sheknows.com\/feature\/jessica-biel-interview-candy-montgomery-affair-2564583\/\"> has said<\/a>. \u201cShe\u2019s kind of a people pleaser, kind of a perfectionist, you know, someone who has been taught and told to make it happy, make it look good \u2014 everything\u2019s fine.\u201d\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
