Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay that takes a look at how Sam Raimi <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaches horror comedy.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Genres can be helpful, especially when you\u2019re not quite sure what you\u2019re in the mood for. While the unique thrill of\u00a0<em>physically\u00a0<\/em>walking between genre sections in a video store may be a thing of the past (boo), there\u2019s an admitted convenience to searching \u201cwestern\u201d or \u201cbiopic\u201d on your streaming service of choice to cut straight to the chase.<\/p>\n<p>But genre rules were meant to be broken, or at the very least, bent. Genre hybrids, for instance, are plentiful. And of\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>the genre mishmashes out there, one, in particular, is especially, uh, <em>weird<\/em>: horror comedy. In theory, these two genres shouldn\u2019t work together under any circumstances. After all, they both are aimed at eliciting completely opposite reactions in their audiences: joy and terror. However, upon closer inspection, horror and comedy share one key trait. Namely: a talent for prompting visceral, base-level reactions. Screams. Gasps. Chuckles. Snorts. It\u2019s no surprise that a showman like director <strong>Sam Raimi\u00a0<\/strong>would repeatedly return to such an entertainment-forward well. It\u2019s the \u201chooting and hollering\u201d metric. A good horror comedy should make you punch the air or retch in disgust. Raimi proposes: why not both?<\/p>\n<p>On paper, Raimi\u2019s handful of horror comedies play like straight horror: a boyfriend mutilating his girlfriend in a cursed cabin in the woods (<em>Evil Dead II<\/em>), a young woman being pursued by a deathly curse (<em>Drag Me to Hell<\/em>)<em>,<\/em> a death pit filled with homicidal, bloated corpses (<em>Army of Darkness<\/em>) \u2014 that kind of thing! But for Raimi, the \u201ccomedy\u201d half of things all boils down to the execution, not, as is often the case with horror comedies, to winking nods to the audience\u2019s knowledge of the conventions and history of the horror genre itself.<\/p>\n<p>As the video essay below explains in more detail, Raimi\u2019s \u201cfunhouse gauntlet\u201d approach to horror comedy ultimately relies on a varied bag of tricks, from exaggeration and escalation to seeing how much slapstick punishment <em>Evil Dead\u00a0<\/em>star Bruce Campbell is able to take.
