vehicles\u2019 rear and center doors for customers \u2014 to try to thwart free-loading scofflaws, The Post has learned. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffective im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely, to deter fare evasion,\u201d agency drivers cannot \u201cuse the rear door toggle switch to\u00a0open the rear\/center automatically, unless it is necessary due to an emergency situation,\u201d says a May 6 memo sent to all MTA bus operators.<\/p>\n<p>The new directive will ideally force potential fare beaters to enter through the front doors of the bus \u2014 and be confronted by the driver if they don\u2019t pay. <\/p>\n<p>It also means bus riders will have to manually activate the rear and center doors themselves if they want to exit through them. <\/p>\n<p>The back and center doors on the MTA\u2019s express \u201cSelect Bus Service\u201d routes will continue to open automatically at all stops, the memo said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe policy is intended to continue to offer customers easy exits while deterring fare evasion by reducing the time that rear doors are open while no one is exiting on local bus routes,\u201d MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said in a statement to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>MTA CEO Janno Lieber last month pledged to tackle\u00a0soaring subway crime\u00a0partly by setting up a review panel to figure out how to curb fare evasion, which has jumped on both survey \u2014 up from just over 20 percent at the end of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>But J.P. OMNY tap-and-go card-payment readers have been installed on all buses but are currently only turned on for Select Bus routes.<\/p>\n<p>Lieber last month told reporters it was too soon to turn on the rear-door OMNY readers because the vast majority of bus riders still pay with MetroCards or cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we only have somewhere between 10 and 15 percent OMNY penetration on the buses,\u201d he said. \u201cIt wouldn\u2019t really be fair to try to manage rear-door bus boarding and limit it to OMNY customers.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
