Sorry, you\u2019re wrong&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n                            In early March, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/16\/1087062648\/deepfake-video-zelenskyy-experts-war-manipulation-ukraine-russia\">manipulated video of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was circulated<\/a>. In it, a digitally generated Zelenskyy told the Ukrainian national army to surrender. The video was circulated online but was quickly debunked as a deepfake \u2014 a hyper-realistic yet fake and manipulated video produced using artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>While Russian disinformation seems to be having a limited impact, this alarming example illustrated the potential consequences of deepfakes.<\/p>\n<p>However, deepfakes are being used successfully in assistive <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. For instance, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idrnd.ai\/what-is-voice-cloning\/\">people who suffer from Parkinson\u2019s disease can use voice cloning to communicate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Deepfakes are used in education: Ireland-based speech synthesis company CereProc created a synthetic voice for John F. Kennedy, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cereproc.com\/en\/jfkunsilenced\">bringing him back to life to deliver his historical speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet every coin has two sides. Deepfakes can be hyper-realistic, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9010912\">basically undetectable by human eyes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the same voice-cloning technology could be used for phishing, defamation, and blackmailing. When deepfakes are deliberately deployed to reshape public opinion, incite <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> conflicts and manipulate elections, they have the potential to undermine democracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<figure>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" srcdoc=\"&lt;style&gt;*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}html,body{background:#000;height:100%}img{position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;transition:opacity .1s cubic-bezier(0.4,0,1,1)}a:hover img+img{opacity:1!important}&lt;\/style&gt;&lt;a href=\" https:=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/AmUC4m6w1wo\/hqdefault.jpg\" style=\"top: 50%;left:50%;width:68px;height:48px;transform:translate3d(-50%,-50%,0)\" height=\"240\" width=\"320\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>        <!--resp-video-container--><\/p>\n<figure><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Researchers at the University of Washington produced a deepfake of Barack Obama.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causing_chaos\"><\/span>Causing chaos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Deepfakes are based on a technology known as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/towardsdatascience.com\/understanding-generative-adversarial-networks-gans-cd6e4651a29\">generative adversarial networks<\/a> in which two algorithms train each other to produce images.<\/p>\n<p>While the technology behind deep fakes may sound complicated, it is a simple matter to produce one. There are numerous online <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/faceswap.dev\/\">Faceswap<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/zao.en.softonic.com\/android\">ZAO Deepswap<\/a> that can produce deepfakes within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Google Colaboratory \u2014 an online repository for code in several programming languages \u2014 includes examples of code that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/colab.research.google.com\/github\/AliaksandrSiarohin\/first-order-model\/blob\/master\/demo.ipynb\">can be used to generate fake images and videos<\/a>. With software this accessible, it\u2019s easy to see how average users could wreak havoc with deepfakes without realizing the potential security risks.<\/p>\n<p>The popularity of face-swapping apps and online services like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usaii.org\/ai-insights\/do-you-think-deepfakes-are-creepy-wait-till-you-hear-about-deep-nostalgia\">Deep Nostalgia<\/a> show how quickly and widely deepfakes could be adopted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public. In 2019, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jenniferhicks\/2021\/09\/21\/the-rise-of-voice-cloning-and-deep-fakes-in-the-disinformation-wars\/\">approximately 15,000 videos using deepfakes were detected<\/a>. And this number is expected to increase.<\/p>\n<p>Deepfakes are the perfect tool for disinformation campaigns because they produce believable fake <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> that takes time to debunk. And with the rising proliferation of deepfakes, politicians could easily deny culpability in any emerging scandals. How can someone\u2019s identity in a video be confirmed if they deny it?<\/p>\n<p>Combating disinformation, however, has always been a challenge for democracies as they try to uphold freedom of speech. Human-AI partnerships can help deal with the rising risk of deepfakes by having people verify the information. Introducing new legislation or applying existing laws to penalize producers of deepfakes for falsifying information and impersonating people could also be considered.<\/p>\n<p>Multidisciplinary approaches by international and national governments, private companies, and other organizations are all vital to protect democratic societies from false information.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
