It\u2019ll fail, but the real point is to score points with the party\u2019s base and (hopefully) with swing voters now leaning Republican.<\/p>\n<p>Problem is, those groups are at odds on abortion, too.<\/p>\n<p>That divide has long been concealed since the Supreme Court took abortion law largely out of the voters\u2019 hands, allowing most Americans to not think about it while the two extremes waged symbolic warfare. Yet the fact is that most of Americans are neither completely pro-life nor totally pro-choice, but a mix of both.<\/p>\n<p>Each side chooses its polls (and poll questions) to pretend it represents the majority, but the fact is that most who \u201csupport abortion rights\u201d are mainly thinking of the <em>first<\/em> trimester (which is when the vast majority of abortions get done); relatively few back legal abortion in the <em>third<\/em> trimester.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s been so since the day the Supremes issued the Roe ruling, which is why neither extreme has <em>ever<\/em> had the votes in the House or Senate to pass a national abortion law in case the court overruled Roe (as it now seems likely to do).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"709\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/12931451ab.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Protesters\" class=\"wp-image-22201463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/12931451ab.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2048 2048w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/12931451ab.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/12931451ab.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/12931451ab.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Pro-life and pro-choice demonstrators get into an argument over their opposing views. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Keiko Hiromi\/AFLO\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The main thing that\u2019s changed these last five decades is that Democrats became the \u201cpro-choice\u201d party, and Republicans the \u201cpro-life\u201d one, with middle ground increasingly scarce.<\/p>\n<p>There are many recriminations that the Democrats didn\u2019t \u201cdo something\u201d since 1973 to legalize abortion, but it didn\u2019t h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en for the same reason Republicans didn\u2019t legislatively ban abortion \u2014 neither side had enough of a majority to do so. There were pro-abortion rights Republicans and anti-abortion Democrats throughout those decades.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the middle ground on abortion will rise again in US national politics post-Roe, but it\u2019ll take time for the politicians to move beyond symbolic gestures aimed at the extremes, and for the many voters who\u2019ve stood quiet to speak up. Who knows?
