Cars picking up Gopuff goods don\u2019t have the required commercial license plates, locals gripe.<\/p>\n<p>The drivers also enter through the employee entrance of the store, indicating that they are not customers, neighbors say. <\/p>\n<p>Gopuff told The Post that it does use cars for deliveries in the outer boroughs but said that \u201cdelivering orders by car in Manhattan is a violation of our stated expectations.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Marco Botarelli, who lives across from the store at 1349 Lexington Ave., disputes Gopuff\u2019s claim. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are loitering in their cars with their music playing,\u201d Botarelli told The Post in reference to Gopuff drivers. \u201cAnd there are never any spots for us if we need to park in front of our building for a few minutes.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-96.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Gopuff\" class=\"wp-image-22225882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-96.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-96.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-96.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>\u201cThey are loitering in their cars with their music playing,\u201d Carnegie Hill resident Marco Botarelli griped about Gopuff<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">William C. Lopez\/NYPOST<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Local business owners are also fed up with the situation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plumbers, the food vendors and other trades workers who have proper plates can\u2019t park in front of the businesses that they are servicing because of these cars,\u201d said John Miklatek, who owns a health food store called Food Liberation on the block.<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors say Gopuff has used cars in New York since at least February, when Carnegie Hill City Councilmember Julie Menin sent a letter to its co-founders and CEOs, Rafael Ilishayev and Yakir Gola, to complain about \u201cGopuff delivery vehicles remaining double parked for lengthy periods of time, trapping residents\u2019 cars until delivery drivers finally come to move their vehicles.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Gopuff told Menin it would review the car complaints.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-89.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Gopuff\" class=\"wp-image-22225901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-89.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-89.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-89.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Gopuff drivers are parking in commercial vehicle spaces despite not having the appropriate plates. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">William C. Lopez\/NYPOST<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to Gopuff that we are good neighbors,\u201d Gopuff said. \u201cThis includes listening to and working with our neighbors to address any concerns they may have \u2014 something we regularly do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Menin has submitted a legislative request to regulate the industry via the Department of Consumer Affairs, which would issue licenses to these businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t have unlicensed cars that take over a block and neighborhoods without any regulation,\u201d Menin told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> comes after months of complaints from neighbors and local politicos about delivery workers on electric bikes and scooters flouting traffic laws, as reported by The Post. Menin said that she and her three-year-old daughter were nearly run over by a delivery driver riding a moped on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Gopuff-33.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Yakir Gola, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Gopuff\" class=\"wp-image-22226019\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Gopuff-33.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Gopuff-33.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/Gopuff-33.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Carnegie Hill City Council member Julie Menin sent a letter to Gopuff\u2019s co-founders and CEOs Yakir Gola (pictured) and Rafael Ilishayev to complain about delivery vehicles. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gopuff\u2019s previously unreported use of cars in New York City has been so under the radar that even one of the industry\u2019s biggest critics, City Councilmember Gale Brewer, was unaware that it was using drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Gopuff is using cars for deliveries, they are exacerbating congestion and pollution,\u201d Brewer told The Post, accusing Gopuff and other startups of \u201ccoming into town upending local laws and extracting what they can from our neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the past week, Gopuff has posted listings across online job boards for delivery drivers, including in specific New York neighborhoods such as Manhattan\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/g.co\/kgs\/Si4u5G\">Lower East Side<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gopuff.com\/gfj\/manhattan-ny-gopuff-is-looking-for-driver-or-bike-delivery-partners-in-noho-astor-place-6263d715ae56b125a1d2570d\">NoHo<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/g.co\/kgs\/rVdMjQ\">Upper West Side<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gopuff.com\/gfj\/manhattan-ny-drive-with-gopuff-seaport-627352d9ae56b13cd5fde7d6\">Seaport<\/a>, as well as Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens.<\/p>\n<p>Gopuff insisted to The Post that it\u2019s not actually hiring drivers in Manhattan and that the ads were meant to attract bike couriers. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-27.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Gopuff\" class=\"wp-image-22225990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-27.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-27.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/gopuff-27.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Gopuff offers fast delivery of groceries and other household items. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Gopuff<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The listings say that drivers must be at least 21 years old and have their own vehicles with proof of insurance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fellow grocery delivery apps Gorillas, Getir and Jokr all confirmed to The Post that they never use cars for deliveries in New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Sarah Kaufman, a transit expert and professor at New York University\u2019s Rudin Center for Transportation, said she was baffled by the decision to use cars for deliveries in traffic-clogged Manhattan. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m frankly surprised that they find it more efficient to use a car, especially in Manhattan, than to use other modes of transport because I imagine they\u2019re spending much of that time sitting in traffic,\u201d Kaufman told The Post. \u201cAdding cars to New York City streets is the last thing we want to do right now, so I\u2019m disappointed to hear that that is happening.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>But Brittain Ladd, a retail consultant who has worked with rapid delivery companies including Gopuff, said that switching to car deliveries could make sense to help the company cut costs amid pressure from investors. <\/p>\n<p>While distributing several orders with one driver will likely raise delivery times for Gopuff customers, especially in ultra-congested neighborhoods like the Lower East Side, Ladd said that making several deliveries out of one vehicle means lower labor costs.
